Channel 5 controller Ben Frow's Edinburgh TV Festival session (video/summary in OP)

Key points raised are below.

Channel 5 as a whole:

Spoiler:

- Frow is 'interested' in Brexit - he's looking for people who want to 'define their own destiny' to replace most of the benefits programmes.
- C5's share is growing across its portfolio
- 5STAR has started commissioning & already has returning shows that are skewing young and female
- Frow sees C5's digital channel portfolio as 'important for targeting demographics'
- Frow's a big believer in great content - 'if you produce great content, viewers will come'
- Frow on benefits programmes 'it was *the* talking point of the nation'
- Frow's sick of C5 being called a 'copycat' channel - 'hand on heart, I have never, never, never copied a programme from another channel'
- 10,000BC was 'a very expensive project'
- 'I will change people's perception of Channel 5... Look at what we do'
- Frow says no more benefits programmes, 'but that doesn't mean that it can't be explored in another form'
- Viacom 'helped persuade' him to commission more entertainment/comedy
- Rylan 'is a truly talented and amazing presenter', his chat show may come back 'in some form' but not stripped
- Viacom are keen for more content that can play across the Viacom portfolio
- 'If you don't get 'em, they'll simply move somewhere else'
- There will always be a place for acquisitions on Channel 5
- More lifestyle/docudramas/natural history coming up on Channel 5
- Channel 5 HQ moves to the Viacom building in Camden this October
- "A couple of old Channel 5 hits"may be revived + maybe a few countdown shows to celebrate Channel 5's 20th anniversary
- "Scripted drama" coming next year after the success of Suspects
- Neighbours is "on fire" at the moment, looking to do 'something big' with Neighbours next year

Big Brother:

- 'It's a very big player in the channel'
- BB was strategically placed at 9 this year to avoid the Euros/Olympics (it held up quite well)
- Civilian BB will play at 10PM/maybe 11PM in the future, Celeb BB may stay at 9PM
- Frow wants fresh commissions 'to take the limelight off Big Brother'
- Off-the-cuff comment on Big Brother winners 'you don't always get it right'

("You stated last year that you were taking a 'big look' at Big Brother. With CBS announcing a digital edition of Big Brother US, what's next for the UK show?")

- Love Island gave them 'a bit of a jolt', head start on Big Brother '****ing made me angry'
- When he came to Channel 5 he said that he 'didn't want to be the person that kills Big Brother'
- It's rating well for C5
- "We owe it to the viewers really to be bold enough to say 'how can we evolve this into the future?'"
- He wants a 'big brave bold, blue sky editorial discussion' with Endemol to see how the show can be kept 'as a leader' (also saying that he 'doesn't want to be second'), possibly affecting the January series.

Banning Bear from the franchise? :fc:

Amy Jade 24-08-2016 09:01 PM

Somebody ask him if he's ashamed of the manipulative editing during this series of CBB

zakman440 25-08-2016 03:37 PM

His controller session ended earlier on - not many updates on Twitter but they're uploading the full sessions a lot quicker than usual this year (we may get it either later today or tomorrow). He did speak at the Leaders Debate earlier in the day as well:

A couple of quotes:

Cal. 25-08-2016 03:40 PM

His whole speech was about sex? BORING.

zakman440 25-08-2016 03:44 PM

That was just one part of the Leaders Debate (with the controllers of C4, ITV, BBC TV/iPlayer and Sky), not his own controller session.

Northern Monkey 25-08-2016 03:47 PM

C5 does have all the best shows.Gotham,Wentworth,The Walking Dead,BB,etc

Rob! 25-08-2016 03:53 PM

He says that not one OFCOM complaint has been upheld since he joined the channel...clearly forgetting about the Daley situation then.

Clootie Dumpling 25-08-2016 04:29 PM

I didn't notice the Channel 5 rebrand TBH!

zakman440 25-08-2016 10:02 PM

The full session has been uploaded already - I'll give a summary once I've finished watching.

Rob! 25-08-2016 10:50 PM

Hasn't spoken a huge amount about BB so far. He's said that next year the civilian version will be going out at 10 and the celeb probably at 9. Seems sensible.

T* 25-08-2016 10:51 PM

not them having to seperate cats C4 and C5 with the BBC

endemol please talk sense into c5

Will. 25-08-2016 11:50 PM

Do Channel 5 make BBUK or do Endemol?

zakman440 26-08-2016 12:12 AM

Endemol make the show but Channel 5 has the final say on what goes out/most decisions that are made.

I think this Endemol vs. Channel 5 stuff is amusing. They are both as inept as each other.

Surely you can see that?

Well, during BB17 Endomol apparently had quite an angry meeting with C5 about the lack of live updates hence why we started with no Twitter updates whatsoever and then got them a couple of weeks into the series. They're apparently very aware that we're the only version without a constant live feed.

I just don't buy it to be honest. The production team are the ones who come up with these ridiculous "twists", these evictions without public votes, the naff tasks etc. I've no doubt Channel 5 exec's like Frow have no idea what they're doing - you only need look at him to see he's an idiot - but the production team and have time and time again shown themselves to be utterly inept.

Morgan. 26-08-2016 02:16 PM

Taking the 'limelight' off BB is the last thing we need, and moving it to 10/11 is a bad decision too. I think it's time to a fresh, knowledgable face to approach it and sort things out.

Cal. 26-08-2016 02:21 PM

Hmm I'm not sure how I feel about 10pm. Will affect the ratings surely.

TomC 26-08-2016 02:21 PM

Yeah I'm not that keen on it being so late. I can deal with 10pm, but I can't imagine it at 11.

Mystic Mock 26-08-2016 02:30 PM

This is what I would do if I was Ch5.

1. As BB is their biggest franchise (including CBB in this obviously) I would put it on at 9PM as it's prime time slot for both Celeb and Civilian BB.

2. I would have Live Feed on the main Ch5 website, and if not many people view it on there then I'd test it out on the Red button on Ch5's main channel.

3. Make the show more left wing again like it was on Ch4, all this new right wing BB seems to do is have white model A and white model B in the show, I want people from different walks of life coming onto the show.

4. I'd stop making the highlights being just about one or two Housemates, even if one of the Housemates was incredibly tedious to watch I'd still give them some screentime just to let the public make their own minds up on that person.

5. Away from BB I'd start making not just Soap Operas pretending to be Dramas, I'd try to make a show similar to 24, I'd make a Horror show, a Fantasy show, and a Sci-Fi show, and maybe something like Boku Wa Tomodachi Ga Sukunai for western audiences, we need the British people exposed to more than just Reality TV and Soap Operas, don't ban those genres by any means, but the UK needs other types of programmes too.

That's my opinion anyway on what I'd do with Ch5 anyway.

Yaki da 26-08-2016 02:44 PM

Is it me or is he an extraordinarily small man?

What a bizarre idea of left wing and right wing you have.
