Is it ok to not eat if sick?

So I've only ice cream today at around 3PM and just loads of water.

I'll probably try and eat something tomorrow.

Is it ok to not eat if sick?

MB. 21-09-2016 08:47 PM

Why is the NHS website never your first port of call on these things

MTVN 21-09-2016 08:48 PM

Well yeah you don't want to force yourself to eat

Vicky. 21-09-2016 08:50 PM

Yes..people can go without food for weeks and still be fine  A day is nothing

Just make sure you drink plenty of water. And I wouldn't recommend going weeks.

Jessica. 21-09-2016 08:50 PM

Is it okay to make multiple threads about being sick even though I am old enough and educated enough to know the obvious answer?

Will, if it goes 3 days with just water and no food, you actually stop feeling hungry at all :joker:

I was so tempted to do a water fast once when I found out this. 3 days of being hungry then the hunger disappears totally until you are 'truly hungry' at which time you have to eat again but healthy stuff, mainly raw veg to start with

I have seen amazing weightloss examples from them, and my GP agrees they aren't dangerous if long term. I wanted to do one for the supposed health benefits though. I still have massive issues with undiagnosed chronic pain and apparently water fasts can effectively 'cure' some illnesses.

Could do with it for the weightloss too I guess at the min.

Apparently once water weight is off you can lose up to 1-2lb per DAY. Which sounds crazy but there have been cases of this and it staying off too.

I lost a lot of weight 2 years ago by fasting Monday and Tuesday and following slimming world with my mum the rest of the week. My mum lost half a stone in two weeks doing it.

I never had as much to lose but I was losing every week. Most doctors are pretty happy for you to fast, its a detox really.

I'd say no, I'm no expert or anything but your body needs energy/nutrients etc from food, right? I don't like the idea of fasting (I know that's not what you're saying but since it's been brought up), even if you can survive for x amount of time without food there's a reason you get hungry, your body isn't designed for fasting. And doesn't fasting have negative effects on your digestive system? I could be wrong about that.
On the sickness thing though I know there's a saying, feed a cold, starve a fever. Not sure if that's really applicable to you though  But yeah basically unless you have something where eating would be detrimental to your health for whatever reason, then I'd say to try and eat whether you feel like it or not. Eating food is like the most basic thing needed for being healthy, right?!

Mokka 22-09-2016 05:35 AM

First of all... eating ice cream when you are sick is not ok. It is hard on the digestive system and it is mucus forming. Idk what kind of sick you are Will... but I guess I still go by the old adage...feed a fever... starve a cold. But when I say starve a cold... I mean plenty of fluids...and not just water when you are sick...because your body needs nutrients to heal....so juice, herbal tea...soup broth...
Water fasting can be done... I don't recommend it though...safely by someone who starts it in good health. If you are sick...water fasting isn't going to help you.

..with a stomach bug, it's ok for the virus to pass through your body more quickly to just have fluids and also to rehydrate you with those things lost in vomiting... but I'm with Jamie in that it's weakened your body/your virus so you have to re-charge that as well and re-energise...so eating something light/little and often type thing and what you feel you can is the thing now...(sorry I'm in a rush but I hope that you're feeling a little better today, Will.....)...

1 day should be fine. If you do feel slightly hungry but are scared incase youre sick again then try having a piece of toast just to line your stomach.

When you do start eating have light stuff, some scrambled egg or soup mavbe.

Crimson Dynamo 22-09-2016 07:35 AM
