Shooting at Ohio State University - 7 people taken to hospital
 

Seven people have been taken to hospital with injuries after a reported shooting at Ohio State University.

The Columbus Fire Department said two of the casualties were in a stable condition, but provided no information on the other five.

US media are reporting that a suspect has died and nine people were injured in the incident.

The university placed the campus on lockdown and sent a tweet to students warning them to "Run Hide Fight".

"Continue to shelter in place in north campus area. Follow directions of Police on scene," authorities tweeted.

The shooting reportedly began around 10:00 local time near Watts Hall, the college's materials science and engineering building.

"The first thing I heard were screams," student Cydney Ireland told ABC News.

"Probably five seconds after that there were three gunshots and it sounded like a handgun.

"And I've never seen anything like it. Everybody was running in any direction they possibly could."

According to the school newspaper, The Lantern, police have surrounded the Lane Avenue parking garage, where an officer at the scene said a suspected shooter was believed to be inside.

A bomb squad was also at the scene, the newspaper reported.

"Ohio's thoughts and prayers go out to the Ohio State community," Ohio Governor John Kasich tweeted.

"Be safe, listen to first responders", he added.

Presumably because if there's a guy in your classroom shooting people indiscriminately then fighting is better than sitting waiting to be shot?

if you're in a classroom and a shooter breaks in, best thing to do is to fight back, not only to disarm but to distract the shooter and throw them off their plan. Active shooter response training is the formal name for this type of stuff

Columbus police have confirmed one suspect is dead and two additional persons of interest were taken into custody from a nearby parking garage, reports NBC News.

The Ohio State University Police tweeted a statement around 11:30 a.m. reading: "Shelter in Place lifted. Scene is now secure. ALL classes are canceled on Columbus campus for the remainder of the day

I'm hearing that the suspect hit pedestrians with a car before attacking with a Butchers knife, but no shooting.

I'd assume the shooting if any came from the Police.

The suspect is reported to be a Somalian refugee.

Yeah, more and more reports are coming out saying that the suspect was charging into a crowd with a butcher's knife. Likely when students were going between classes.

EDIT: Cops were on the scene already for a fire alarm for a real fire going off in a nearby building, apparently the cops being there already added to the confusion.
