Scream' turns 20: How Wes Craven's masterpiece changed the horror genre

On Dec. 20, 1996, Scream was released, instantly giving the world a new answer to the film's iconic question: "What's your favorite scary movie?"

Scream was a box-office and critical success upon release, spawning a sequel the following year, third and fourth films and finally, a television series. It even gave horror filmmaker Wes Craven's career a second life.

The significance of Scream is still felt 20 years after its release. It breathed new life into the slasher genre, paving the way for movies like I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend and Final Destination. Its influence is even evident in more recent horror movies like Cabin In The Woods and You're Next. Point being: Modern horror owes much to the existence to Scream.

I remember when I first watched this at the age of 9 and it made me feel really scared and sick but at the same time I wanted to be Sidney Prescott // Neve Campbell so bad. I also cried for Miss Barrymore.

Scream was the first slasher I watched, and it's still one of the best and most intelligent horror movies out there.

I still can't believe I was allowed to watch this at age SIX not long after it came out at a friend's sleepover (his Mam had a pirate copy on VHS).

Those were amazing times... God bless the 90's.

Genuinely think it's one of the most of the most influential films ever made :clap1: I'm still holding out hope for a Scream 5

My sister made me watch it when I was like 7. It's probably the first horror film I ever saw and it got me into the genre with all their references. :flutter:

It even got me into the Halloween movies. I remember me and my sister wanting to watch the film they were watching at the party (Halloween) and we caught it on TV one time and then we were so perched when H20 came out the following year

I'm not given Wes Craven past away last year (RIP ) and I don't really want anyone else touching the franchise.

The TV series sort of makes up for not having another sequel, even if the movies are superior.
