The problem is that some of these prisons are privatised and the companies who run them cut back staff to enhance profit. The few guards there is can't run the prison and the conditions are terrible.Bullying and drug addiction is rife and dealers beating and stabbing addicts who owe them money.I know these people are in there for punishment but i think their safety should atleast be a concern.I'm not talking about murderers and rapists but there are people going in for minor offences and coming out with drug addictions and mental health problems who then go on to commit more serious crimes.
There was a documentary on the other week that really opened my eyes to how bad some of these prisons are.

its terrible - you go in a petty criminal and you come out a lot worse. about time prisons changed and they done what they are meant to do - rehabilitate.
