George Michael was well known for being an iconic musician, both in Wham! and as a solo star, but in the hours since his death was reported, several fans have been taking to social media to share stories of George's generosity and philanthropy, revealing that he donated millions of pounds to numerous charities and causes over his lifetime.

t's also emerged (via ITV News) that over his lifetime George has made several donations to charities including Childline, the Terrence Higgins Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support, including giving all the royalties from his 1996 single 'Jesus to a Child' to Childline, and the royalties from his 1991 duet with Elton John to the Terrence Higgins Trust.

"His donations contributed to a vision of a world where people living with HIV live healthy lives free from prejudice and discrimination," Jane Barron, from the Terrence Higgins Trust, said.

When you have millions a few grand is like giving 10p. Let's keep it real. I'm not being mean but keep perspective.

Good to see the point hasn't gone over your head.

But how many people even though they have millions would be that generous with complete strangers? Not many.

And I doubt there's many celebrities that would give away even that much. It's nice to know that not everyone has been defeated by greed.

Probably lots as it does not cost much

But, again, how does that come into it?

Does everybody automatically do things that "don't cost much"? :suspect:

It wouldn't cost most of us on here much to feed some cheap soup to the homeless, how many of us actually do it?

I like the fact that when he gave, he did it behind the scenes so to speak. Too many people give, but make sure the world and his wife know all about it.

great point jenny and the fact he done it this way shows he was not doing it for anyone but himself.

pure good all the way through but them blasted demons he had - but he was a genius . so so sad.

Again I am not being mean but just keeping perspective. If all you had in the world was £2500 in your bank account giving £25,000 is the equivalent of giving 6p
(*based on his 100,000,000 fortune)

good to keep this in mind

Indeed.

Good man. A lot of the rich do give. It's a shame it sounds like he didn't write a will before he died though.

Also lets look at the lives of people it has saved not the equivalent to what a everyday British Person earns

I read that after watching an episode of Deal or no Deal, one woman wanted 15k for IVF treatment and he rang the show and gave it to her :flutter:

The point is as Jenny said LT he did it anonymously, most celebs would be screaming it from the rooftops, he helped but not in an obvious way

But, again, what is the point you're making?

Nobody's suggesting he's giving his whole fortune away. Different people can afford to give away different amounts, but not many do.

It's irrelevant to keep in mind because the point isn't how insignificant you feel the money was to him, it's how significant it would have been to the people he helped with it.
