Time traveler James Cole travels from the year 2043 to the present day to stop the release of a deadly virus by the enigmatic organization known as "The Army of the Twelve Monkeys". That virus, in Cole's future, caused the death of most of the world's population. Led by a cryptic message from the past, Cole makes contact with the brilliant virologist Cassandra Railly, who he believes is the key to stopping the virus. Cole also enlists the help of Jennifer Goines (the insane daughter of the virus' creator), and his best friend Ramse to stop the initial outbreak. As Cole journeys through time in an effort to stop the virus, he realizes the Army of the 12 Monkeys have a larger, more mysterious agenda.

Does anyone else on here watch this? It's loosely based on the movie of the same name so it has the same general premise, but ends up diverging and pretty much becoming it's own entity with nods to the original.

I'm 7 episodes into the first season at the moment and I'm really into it. I expected I would be though, it combines a few of my favourite types of story (time travel, virus outbreak, mystery).

I haven't seen the movie it's based on but I think that's helped me enjoy the show without trying to compare them. I do know a fair bit about how the movie goes though and I think taking the approach of doing their own thing with the premise is a good idea, rather than trying to do the exact same thing. I know it had a lot of naysayers when it was first announced but from what I've seen online, it seems to have won a lot of people around.

I've seen the movie but not that series, I loved the film so I might give it a go

Jamie89 12-02-2017 02:22 PM

I didn't even know it was a show tbh, I've seen the movie and really enjoyed it so I'd be interested to give it a go.

Just finished the first season and can easily say this is now one of my favourite shows. Very trippy and brain-wracking but in the best way. :clap1: (and since Lost, Fringe and Westworld are among my other favourites, it's not a surprise that I love that aspect of it )

Gonna start season 2 soon, most likely gonna get through it in no time so I hope season 3 isn't too many months away!

Vicky. 13-02-2017 05:52 PM

Ahh I started watching this ages ago then our sky cut out so my boxsets were gone and I totally forgot about it. I only watched 4 episodes I think and they were really good. I think I will start watching it again once I get through the last series of orange is the new black.

Niamh. 13-02-2017 06:42 PM

Watched ep 1 last night, seems really good so far

Lostie! 13-02-2017 08:54 PM

Might give the film a watch sometime soon, it will make it easier to spot any references to it the show makes. Speaking of, Madeleine Stowe (Railly in the movie) appeared in season 2 apparently but I've been keeping away from details about her role until I watch it

Cal. 13-02-2017 08:55 PM

You're always bloody watching everything!

Lostie! 13-02-2017 08:58 PM

I've recently dropped about 5 shows to make room for new blood so shush, be constructive or get out :idc:

Niamh. 15-02-2017 03:12 PM

I'm up to episode 3

Spoiler:

I hated that Cole killed Henri :( I liked him

Yeah, I suppose he had to really to stop him telling jasmine and lavender man what he told him about the secret lab but still :bawling:

Lostie! 15-02-2017 03:33 PM

Oh I love him, such a creepy villain. And I think us not knowing his name adds to that. His introduction in the second episode
Spoiler:

when he killed Cassie's friend and covered him in petals
is still one of my favourite scenes.

Did you watch the film yet? I might have a rewatch of it, it was years ago when i saw it, from what i remember though Brad Pitt played the Jennifer character, I think anyway

Oh no I still need to actually. Might do tonight! And yeah, I read that he plays Jeffrey Goines who became Jennifer Goines in the show.

I'm interested to see the original version since Jennifer is one of my favourite characters on the show.

Her, Jones, the Pallid Man (that seems to be the official term for the creepy petal guy ) and another character you'll meet in a few episodes are my favourites.

Lostie! 15-02-2017 07:07 PM

I'm 4 episodes into season 2 and my mind is blown.
Spoiler:

So Mantis (the female Messenger) is the Pallid Man's mother and that's where he got his "sprinkling petals on his victims" thing from. :o

It's crazy to think that he was born around the 1940s/50s and his mother was born in 2016 when he's an elderly man. This is why I love time travel :joker: :clap2: There have been loads of cool timey wimey twists I've loved on this show but that and the Ramse reveals in episode 11 of season 1 are my favourites so far. :clap1:

I think of the different shows I've seen that have employed time travel, 12 Monkeys has been my favourite in terms of executing it in a really cool way and utilizing it to deliver some really great plot twists.

Marsh. 15-02-2017 07:09 PM

Is this the show with Legend Victoria Grayson?

Lostie! 15-02-2017 07:10 PM

Only in the season 2 finale but yes (well, and a voiceover in the premiere :hee:). She could very well appear in season 3 too but since I'm not fully caught up yet I'm staying away from reading ahead

Marsh. 15-02-2017 07:13 PM

One episode? Pfft.

I like Jennifer aswell, I think its just a good character in both the tv and film versions and Brad Pitt played it well too

Lostie! 06-03-2017 11:13 PM

Completely forgot to come back and update my thoughts when I finished season 2 a couple of weeks back :ninja2:

Another great season tbh. There were a few little aspects of season 2 I wasn't fully sold on but it was really good regardless and delivered some of my favourite episodes of the show so far.

Spoiler:

I just wasn't a big fan of Jones' massacre of Spearhead from season 1 being undone. It was such a pivotal and powerful moment and having that timeline reset undercuts the effect in retrospect (although Jones still remembers it and I like that).

Also not a big fan of Deacon (I really like the actor, seen him on a few shows but I just don't really see Deacon's point :worry:).

But yeah, small quibbles on the whole. I really loved the reveal of The Witness being Cole and Cassie's future child. I was convinced it would be a future Cole (especially when he ended up living in the house from the Witness visions) so it was a really cool twist.

Olivia finally showing up in the future :worship: This whole time I've been assuming she's dead by that point so kept expecting her to be killed off in the present day storyline, very happy that's not the case. She's one of my absolute favourite TV villains  And her being the person who took Sam was a total surprise, as was her being the Pallid Man's sister.

Christopher Lloyd is guest starring in season 3 :amazed: I hope we see Madeleine Stowe again too, her character was really interesting.

Lostie! 06-03-2017 11:54 PM

Found out who Christopher Lloyd is playing

Spoiler:

Quote:

Lloyd will play Zalmon Shaw, a charming but deadly cult leader who preys upon other’s tragedies and losses in order to recruit new members into the apocalyptic cult the “Army of the 12 Monkeys.” Shaw is the father of the series’ most imposing villain, the enigmatic Pallid Man.
Surely we'll find out the Pallid Man's name this season then

Loving the sound this :clap1:

Niamh. 09-03-2017 11:48 AM

Gav has gotten fed up with this already. I still really like it but it's going to take longer to get through now
