Valid Point NM

The onus isn't on how well travelled the fans are or what sports are played in the US, it's the cultural appropriation of the song.
Is the significance of the song known? I would hope so.
It isn't sung with any malice and I can't see them changing, the academics have educated them as to it's history so they aren't ignorant to it's deeper meaning any longer.

"Cultural appropriation" is the biggest BS term going and it's not anything to do with Americans what British rugby fans sing.We don't moan about American Football or Baseball fans and try dictating what they do.

Withano 10-03-2017 09:37 AM

If they were really academics, they should have saw it coming.

Crimson Dynamo 10-03-2017 09:43 AM

Tell them to feck off

Is it? Is it up there with the likes of, 'PC' ' virtue signaling' 'loony lefty' 'snowflake'?
It isn't BS, the historical significance of the song is well documented, there's nothing wrong with acknowledging this.

Well, if they were singing songs with strong connotations to slavery then I'm sure we would...

When you find out that fat white men halfway across the world have been using a slave spiritual sung by your ancestors and inspired by the Underground Railroad, in preparation to throw an egg-shaped ball about whilst having little to no idea about its significance beyond that, I think you'd be allowed to be slightly peeved about it tbh

You get alot of slim women in rugby crowds.

MB. 11-03-2017 06:09 PM

You probably get a lot of slim women from the town Rugby too, but that's still not what I'm talking about

Niamh. 11-03-2017 06:31 PM

You cant really control what fans sing or chant though.

Yep:thumbs:

Hence 'cultural appropriation' being a totally BS term.
Just another way of saying 'you can't do that cos i'm offended'
