Paul O'Grady confirmed as Blind Date's new host on Channel 5

The 61-year-old presenter was best mates with former host Cilla Black – who presented the show for a whopping 18 years – and gave a touching tribute at her funeral in 2015.

Paul commented: "Blind Date is an incredibly special family show which brought laughter, tears and joy to TV viewers throughout the land.

"I am honoured to present the brand new series and after speaking to Channel 5, I know the series is in safe hands. I can't wait to see if we can find love."

Ben Frow, Director of Programmes for Channel 5, commented: "The reaction to the news that Blind Date is returning has been phenomenal and demonstrated the depth of love and affection for the nation's favourite dating show.

"Paul is the perfect choice to bridge the old and the new, capturing the essence and charm of a series that became staple Saturday night family viewing in living rooms up and down country, whilst attracting and appealing to a whole new generation of TV viewers."

Paul, who rose to fame playing Lily Savage on his own game show Blankety Blank, is expected to bring it up-to-date for the 21st century.

Speaking previously about the death of his friend Cilla, the presenter explained they'd been friends for 20 years and she was like a sister to him.

Earlier this year, Holly Willoughby confirmed to Digital Spy that she wouldn't present the show as it's coming back on a rival channel.

The new-look series is thought to debut later this summer on Channel 5 and auditions are open for potential daters if you're feeling lucky, chuck.

Atleast they got a proper presenter and not one of the ones rumoured

Massive step up from the rumours :clap1: Still not sure I'll be watching but I'm a lot more tempted to with Paul hosting, he's great.

Oh here we go Channel 5 taking ownership of a classic show:rolleyes: , doesn't ITV want anything to do with it anymore ?? . I honestly have my doubts about them bringing this back :facepalm: it was good back in the day and I think they should leave it in the past its a classic.

Paul O'Grady is a good presenter but it's Cilla's show and nobody can replace her , they should just do a one off tribute blind date dedicated to her but I don't think it will be successful to actually bring back. And I have a feeling they'll screw around more with the show now and the entire format :bored:
