The couple, who married in their home country, came to Gothenburg last year to seek asylum in Sweden.

Because the girl is 14 years old, the social services in Gothenburg became involved. They decided that the couple should be placed in a shared apartment in another municipality in western Sweden, Ekot reports.

Something that was challenged by the social manager in the municipality.

- I think there would be pretty strong reactions if a Swedish-born girl told me that she was married. But the reactions are obviously not as strong when children come from other countries, he says to Ekot.

Even the Swedish Tax Board approved of the marriage, by registering the couple as married when they received a residence permit. A decision that the Authority now believes was a mistake.

- It is unfortunate that it happened. It is probably inattention, simply a mistake, says Per Skogh from Swedish Tax, to Ekot.

As recently as last year Sweden tightened the rules against child marriages. It is no longer possible to get special permission to get married if you are under 18 years old. Also new offenses that will strengthen protection against forced marriage were introduced.

Since 2009, the practice has been not to accept marriage with children under 15 years.

- It is a good legislation which has made it clear that child marriage is not allowed in Sweden, says Aleksander Gabelic, chairman of the Swedish UN Association, to Aftonbladet.

He is critical of the authorities' actions in this case which he says discriminates between people and nations.

- It's remarkable that one can have different laws for native Swedes and those who come here from another country, he says.

Ragnhild Ekelund from the social emergency service in Gothenburg would not comment on individual cases, but says it may be right to place the child with the adult partner.

- The question is where security is for a person. It could be that security is the partner they came with, she says to Ekot.

Aleksander Gabelic do not buy that argument.

- For the vast majority of children, security is to avoid the marriage that they might have been forced into, he says to Aftonbladet.

This case was only cleared up because it reached media, but how many similar cases are there?

The USA saved Western Europe from Nazism and Soviet Communism but this is cultural threat that we can't save you from. Only you can save yourselves from it. Listen to Donald Trump. What he says is correct. Europe is losing its way. If there is still time to reverse these trends, there's not a lot of time.

Difficult.
A girl in my class got married at thirteen way back when in Africa, to a much older man. A 14 year old was married with twins in the same little town.
Different countries have different rules, the hard bit is deciding how to adapt to them when migrating.

It's still wrong - we can't just condone it in the West. What message would that give out?

It's completely in appropriate for a girl to be married at that age but even in the UK, as with fgm, young girls are taken out of the country try and married to much older men. Our society seems to look the other way.

If he sleeps with her in Sweden then I would think he will be committing a crime and can be locked up and her put into protective services.
The childs welfare should come first over worrying about causing offence to a peado.

That's fine, but if they chose the migrate they must accept its not legal here. It's illegal to drink alcohol in The USA if you are under 21 would you expect your 18 year old to be served because they are legal in the U.K. .. No!

This is a prime example of the West going against their own principles and values and making allowances for a religous ideology that has no place in the West. The West need to stop getting bogged down with all this PC nonsense and stick to what they know to be the right way forward.

Agree with both of the top posts and a hat-tip to Toy Soldier for an excellent response to a rather provocative comment.

Before the original poster pats himself on the back too hard, I would encourage him to look into the legal age of marriage laws in the USA. He will find that in some states it is a low as 13 (New Hampshire, for example) - with the consent of the court. Which is what the case in this thread had - the consent of the court. Of course, that doesn't mean I agree with it, I just wanted to point out that the USA is not in a position to finger-point.
