Can we decide what gender we are based solely on what gender we feel we are?

Without surgery, can any of us just decide one day that we feel we are the other gender and ask to be recognized as that gender?

One of my favorite youtube people Lauren Southerns (conservative) made a video where she decides to make a point and also mock the system by legally becoming a man. Her...err... I mean HIS Canadian driver's license says man. There is another video where he informs a liberal protester that he is a man and I'm attaching it for no other reason than I think it's pretty darn funny.

If that's the kind of stuff you find funny then that's pretty embarrassing

There was a thread on this a while back. I think changing your gender should be easy, why not? Its great that somebody who isnt taking the piss can legally change their gender if they want to.. Can the system be abused by morons? Yh, but I cant think of many problems arising by a few people taking the piss, its a letter on a document.

Changing your sex should be a bit more difficult, and it is.

"Look how clever and funny I'm being by exploiting this system and saying I'm a man even though I'm actually not!" is along the same line of thought as the "well, can't fathers just marry their sons?" opposition to gay marriage, and other such arguments made by those with blatant agendas against anything remotely progressive

Videos like that are just a show of ignorance from people who will never understand the struggle of transgender people because they lack the empathy to understand anything beyond their own situation.

I think these videos demonstrate how scared people are to question anyone who says they are a certain gender. And these videos are REAL investigative journalism that we never get in the mainstream media.

Sure they are, buddy.

Does it really matter if someone changes their gender to what they feel they are? The only people that care are likely people that think the 50's were the golden age of civilisation.

I think 'gender' is an internal feeling tbh, so yes I guess you can decide your gender.

I do not think this means everyone else should have to play along that you are the opposite sex though, in areas where sex actually matters of course.

Kinda depends how you define gender too. To me the modern meaning of gender is kind of an internal essence, rather similar to a soul. To some 'gender' is just another word for 'sex' and this is where the confusion comes in. I mean, theres 50+ different genders and counting..so quite clearly doesnt mean sex or anything close to it

If a girl thinks she's a boy or vice versa, they can shout all day to their hearts content what gender they think they are. That doesn't bother me. In my mind I have my own idea what gender they are and that opinion is derived from cold hard facts about the state of their body (not the state of their mind). In the grand scheme of things this doesn't matter a whole lot but it's a part of a trend that I think hurts society as a whole.

Transgender people have struggles but so does everyone. And, to be frank, they are really not that oppressed at all compared to the slaves of Africa, the women of Saudi Arabia, or the factory workers of China. Don't you think these people would wish they could trade problems with the transgender people of the west?

And I thought the eskimos having 30+ words for snow was ridiculous.

It doesn't 'hurt society' at all. It only hurts people who are fearful of progressive attitudes.

Your second argument is a textbook argument of someone who is scared of equal rights and wishes to oppose it by minimising it as much as possible by making out that it isn't a problem in comparison to other things in the world. What do the conditions of the people in those countries have to do with the civil rights of people in the west? Nothing, it's just an excuse to stop the conversation in it's tracks by people who find it uncomfortable.

Lauren Southern is a ****ing idiot and anyone who likes her is a single man who just fancies her.
In saying that, people who believe they are a 'different' gender are mentally ill but we're not allowed say that because it's mean.

Interesting that the person who says she's an idiot likes Katie Hopkins. Not that I don't like Katie but there seems to be a huge inconsistency here.
