Just watched something that explains the origin.Apparently escaped slaves in 19th century deep south America where they would evade capture by hiding in woodpiles.

There shouldn't be anyone left in public office who thinks language like that is acceptable. I'm always shocked when someone seemingly intelligent blurts out a phrase like this. However, before Labour get all bent out of shape about it, I would remind them of the fact that anti-Semitic language was used by them, and they got Sharmi Chakrabarti to say there was nothing to see... and made her a dame to say thank you.
