TMZ magazine quoted police as saying Bennington hanged himself at a private home in Los Angeles county, California. His body was found on Thursday morning.

Bennington was said to be close to Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell, who took his own life in May.

Formed in 1996, Linkin Park has sold more than 70 million albums worldwide and has two Grammy Awards.

The band had a string of hits including Faint, In The End and Crawling, and collaborated with the rapper Jay-Z.

Its album Meteora topped the Billboard 200 chart in 2003 and is regarded as one of the biggest indie rock records of all time.

Bennington leaves a wife, and six children from two marriages.

He is said to have struggled for years with alcohol and drug abuse, and has talked in the past about suicide as a result of being a victim of abuse as a child.

Chester was married with 6 children from 2 wives.

The singer struggled with drugs and alcohol for years. He had said in the past he had considered committing suicide because he had been abused as a child by an older male.

Chester was very close with Chris Cornell, who himself committed suicide by hanging in May. Today would have been Cornell's 53rd birthday. Chester wrote an open letter to Chris on the day of Chris' suicide.

The band has had a string of hits over the years, including "Faint," "In the End" and "Crawling." Linkin Park crossed music genres, collaborating with Jay-Z.

The band's album, "Meteroa," was one of the biggest alternative albums in music history.

Bennington was 41.

That's just awful.

I didn't stick with them, I don't think many did, but obviously because of the age I am Hybrid Theory factored into my life big time around the time we were all watching Jackass and finding the gaps in THPS2. Used to always imagine Points Of Authority or One Step Closer making for an amazing WrestleMania opener as the pyro goes off.

Went to a packed nu metal show last week that basically had an ensemble of Cork metal musicians grouping up to do all the old bangers in aid of charity. 2,500 or thereabouts raised on the night, band came decked in stupid face paint and braids, everyone having a laugh. Good, silly fun.

I'm so upset by this. This band dominated my earlier teenage years and pretty much got me into the whole world of heavier music and metal.

It's ashame to see such a great talent and seemingly nice guy go to waste.

Growing up these were one of my favourite bands that helped me get into Nu Metal with their Hybrid Theory Album.

RIP Chester Bannington, your memory will live on.
