Suspects receive aggressive letters saying unless they change their 'unreasonable conduct' they could be hit with a community protection notice.

The notices are more usually served on graffiti vandals, flytippers and noisy neighbours.

But as town halls try to boost recycling rates and cut collections they are using the letters to threaten more and more householders.

They were sent to families this summer by council chiefs in Stoke-on-Trent. Other local authorities are adopting similar tactics and threatening criminal prosecutions.

We had the most amazing, delicious curry the other day and it struck me when I was tidying away that those foil cartons all the take away use must be a trash nightmare. Rather than pushing the blame for rubbish on the public, and doing a poor job of dealing with trash, council's should invest in ways to make more containers biodegradable.

:nono: those foil containers are aluminium and should be going straight into your recycling, jaxie! It's one of the most easily recycled materials, very little wastage, much better than the alternative plastic containers that many takeaways come in now (which are also recyclable, but less of the original material is recovered).


My main gripe around here is the frequency of collections. 3 weeks for green bin, 2 weeks for recycling. Now... the green bin isn't as big an issue (unless you miss it like I did last week and have to wait 6 weeks :umm2: ...), and I understand wanting to cut landfill waste, but I personally feel like recycling collection should be weekly. What's the excuse for it not being? We should be aiming for there being far more recycling going on, and very little green bin waste, so the recycling bins need regular emptying. I mean if it's full... what can you do but put perfectly good recyclable stuff in the green bin?

In my local area they alternate between collecting general waste and recycling. I guess the logic there is approx half of household waste will be recyclable?
(Garden stuff is done with the recyclables)

They do "alternate" here but one is three weeks and one is two weeks... so some weeks it's both, some weeks it's just blue, occasionally it's just green, some weeks it's neither. It's a nightmare to keep track of.

Its a ****ing disgrace this mind. Our binmen refuse to empty the bins fairly regularly and seemingly randomly. What on earth are we meant to do about that. They had the little old lady across from us in tears last week as they didn't empty hers and didn't leave a note so she didn't know what was actually wrong. It was the 'normal' bins too so not even as if there was stuff in there that shouldn't be. There have been no end of complaints about it.

Last time they refused to empty ours we started just putting binbags in the yard. Yes there was risk of rats and stuff but **** paying people we know (AGAIN) to fill their cars with our rubbish to take to the tip (AND our local tip refuse to take household waste too...probably as they can't sell it). They haven't left ours since then oddly enough, so I genuinely think they are either just bein g dickheads for the sake of it, or are very very crap at their jobs.

Trying to cut down on collections is one thing but then they're obviously going to miss out on much of the recycling which will end up in the general waste.It's failed logic.
If they want people to recycle more then come and collect it more to insentivise people to do it.
Rifling through people's bins with cameras and fining them is just gonna piss the tax payers off who are keeping these idiots in a job.That won't insentivise anything other than resentment,more fly tipping and less recycling.
What are we even paying these people for.They need to get out and do their job and keep Britain tidy.It's unrealistic for people with families to keep up with these ever more stringent demands.It's just bullying.A single mother with 3-4 kids doesn't have time to be doing the refuse peoples job for them.

It is a disgrace.If it gets too much worse i can see councils ending up in court.It's them who aren't doing their job properly.Not collecting is totally counter productive and won't make anything better.Just the opposite waste just builds up on the streets instead of where it should be.It's the opposite of green.Blaming the public for their own failings.

It proper ****s me off. They haven't emptied ours properly for ages now. They always leave half in there. It's an absolute nightmare. My mam has rang up twice now and told it will be dealt with but it never is. They didn't empty our recycling the other week too for seemingly no reason.

I just throw my rubbish (proper rubbish) in the bin at work and recycle the rest myself at recycle places

Perhaps there should be a campaign to opt out.
If you are paying for a service and that service falls well below standard then we should be refunded that part of the council tax.
If ever there was a case for privatisation then this fits the bill.

This is a top down problem. The government gives a budget to all its councils and the council has to budget that money accordingly. They simply don't get enough funding to pay the huge costs of landfill and recycling and so are left with no choice than to opt for fewer collections. The local councils are between a rock and a hard place. They either spend more on local rubbish collections at the expense of housing and planning or they reduce the number of collection days at the expense of job losses.

This is exactly how the government sell off and privatize our social assets. They reduce funding to the point of failure and then tell us all its not working and needs to be privatized.

Our bin/recycling men are horrible, the woman who lives just along the street from us (who is about 80) had gotten her plastic and glass recycling bags mixed up (the bags are EXACTLY the same just one says 'plastic only' and the other 'glass only') so had put all her jars in the plastic bag and plastic in the glass etc and they told her she had to swap them around or not take her recycling. She hadn't mixed the recycling up she had just put them in the wrong bag...why not just get rid of them for her? I wasn't there but my mum told my Nan and it pissed me off so much they must have watched an elderly woman change her bags over when all they had to do was tip a ****ing bag in a different slot.

We (Bridgend, South Wales) have our Recycling collected every week and then we also have our Black Bags (which are now actually Blue and limited to 2 per fortnight) general non-recyclables collected every fotnight.
It works pretty well but the 2 Blue Bags are only just sufficient. Not complaining though. Bank Holidays everything goes out a day late. Could be a lot worse.

Bins and recycling collected every week,, green every other on an opt in service..no issues

We genuinely had no problems at all until a year ago. Before that, both were fortnightly, on alternating weeks and it was all fine. Then they switched green bins to every three weeks... and it makes all the difference. Total nightmare, constant overflowing bins, and in summer months the smell from them is unreal. The waste at the bottom of those bins is a full three weeks old by the time it's collected... it's rancid. The sludge at the bottom of freshly-emptied green bins smells like a ****ing sewer.

They're coming for you too Cherie, don't get complacent with your cushy collection service, they'll get you eventually!

I remember you saying your council tax stayed the same we had a 5.5 per cent increase and a a 50.00 levy to get the green waste collected every two weeks so that is why it's still going, there is no magic just pay more for the same service

My town council are ****e, we have no 'bins' we just have to put the bags out on the street. That would be fine, if we wasn't a seaside town besieged by Seagulls. You basically have to put the bags out an hour or so before collection, or the seagulls will tear them open and rubbish will cover the street.

our rubbish collections are rotated every 2 weeks. I only ever use the "green" bin, i just lob everything into that, whatever it is ... piece of cake and its never been refused.
