Catalonia sets date for Independence Referendum

The government of Spain's Catalonia region has set a 'binding referendum' on independence from Spain for Oct. 1.

The move was denounced by the Spanish government, which once again said it would do everything in its legal and political power to stop the vote from going ahead on 1 October.

The Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, ordered government lawyers to file a complaint with the country’s constitutional court so that the vote could be annulled.

The Catalan government insists that the results of the October vote will be legally binding. If successful, the regional government will declare independence from Spain 48 hours after the result is in and set about building a sovereign state.

It's a completely different sort of mess really. An estimated 80% want independence from Spain in Catalonia... however the Spanish government doesn't consider this referendum to be legitimate and are unlikely to honour the result. So Catalonia will consider itself to be an independent nation, but Spain will still claim official ownership. A similar situation to Taiwan, sort of, though not quite, since both Taiwan and China seem relatively content with "unofficial independence" in Taiwan, but Catalonia wouldn't be.
