Sexual preference treatment programmes
Why do they keep thinking you can change someones sexual preference?
Croft, of Moor View, Crigglestone, Wakefield, pleaded guilty to attempting to incite a girl into sexual activity, attempting to meet a girl following grooming and two offences of making indecent images of a child. James Littlehales, mitigating, said Croft pleaded guilty to the offences at an early stage and was willing to accept treatment to address his offending. Croft, of Moor View, Crigglestone, Wakefield, was ordered to take part in a three-year sex offender treatment programme. I just don't think it's possible, which is a shame in cases like this... thoughts? http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.u...ourt-1-8839712 |
The court has to be seen to be doing something, its effectively a box ticking exercise, so that he can be released back into society at some point because he has been rehabilitated allegedly, waste of money really

I'm not sure being a sex offender is a "sexual preference"?? Surely the aim of such a programme is to teach people self control, teach about the damage they could do, and how not to act on criminal urges?

If it's simply a degree length course on how not to act on criminal impulses will we be seeing similar on topics such as, tax evasion?... domestic violence?..burglary?...speeding? |

Castration would be simpler and more effective.

I'm aware I'm oversimplifying it, but I too don't think its a sexual preference. |

And addictions / compulsions can (in theory) be broken. We can all start mouthing off and screeching "castrate them all!" or "lock them up foreverrrr" but it's just that. Loud noises. We know that's not actually going to happen. So in the mean time, back in the real world, people are looking for real and creative rehabilitation solutions that might actually stop innocent people from ending up victims. |

Should not a more caring system be more concerned with protecting the majority, the innocent victims, rather than the minority repeat offenders. |

Someone who is a peadophile who has never abused a child is still a peadophile, however someone who has never drank cannot be an alcoholic. I would say that any treatment would have to include some form of chemical castration, treatments for addiction involve avoiding the substance, how do you avoid children? |
I dislike the idea of calling paedophilia a sexual preference since it's a common argument to compare non-hetero sexualities to things like paedophilia and bestiality in order to demonise gay/bi people.
As Withano said, I'd be more inclined to call it a vile fetish. As for the topic, I'm not sure that a peadophile that has already tried to prey on someone can be 'fixed' but then I know little of the treatment process so I can't really judge. I'm just thinking of it like how serial killers actions tend to escalate as they go from killing insects and animals and then humans. I don't think it's possible to deescalate it but then again I'm equating two different criminal mindsets like they are the same. |
