Australia votes YES to equal marriage

Quote:

Australians have voted in favour of legalising same-sex marriage in a historic non-binding poll.
The vote showed 61.6% of people favoured allowing same-sex couples to wed, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said.
The poll had 79.5% participation of eligible voters, the bureau said.

the whole fiasco of having a postal vote has been totally ridiculous and a waste of money, but alas, at least the yes vote was victorious.

a near-on 80% turnout is surprisingly high, unless Australian voting is always that high I guess?

It's compulsory for Australians to vote for political parties, so they're more used to it.

Alf 15-11-2017 03:16 AM

Marriage? That is soooooo hetro.

BBUKAUSFAN 15-11-2017 04:35 AM

its great and all but it means nothing at all for Australia, The government dont even have to do anything its all a waste of money tbh

It's disgusting that there can be a vote on equal rights. The majority getting a VOTE on whether minorities should have equal rights, is just morally reprehensible.

That being said, good job Australia, and congrats.

Omg! what good news, made my day!

Kizzy 15-11-2017 06:02 AM

Yeah I agree, felt abit ridiculous when we were voting too. It was because it involved changing our constitution though and that always has to go to referendum

Bloody weddings. Just an excuse to have a p!ss up and waste money.

Livia 15-11-2017 10:05 AM

So Kylie can start planning her wedding now. She always said she and her fiance wouldn't marry till gay marriage is legal in Australia.
