North Korean defector found to have 'enormous parasites'

A North Korean soldier who was shot fleeing across the border has an extremely high level of parasites in his intestines, his doctors say.

The defector crossed the demilitarised zone on Monday, but was shot several times by North Korean border guards.

Doctors say the patient is stable - but "an enormous number" of worms in his body are contaminating his wounds and making his situation worse.

His condition is thought to give a rare insight into life in North Korea.

"I've never seen anything like this in my 20 years as a physician", South Korean doctor Lee Cook-jong told journalists, explaining the longest worm removed from the patient's intestines was 27cm (11in) long.

We all have parasites. Fortunately, they tend not to thrive and cause problems in a healthy person.

It says in that article that N Korea uses human feces as fertilizer :yuk:

North Koreans are raised to believe that the Kims are like gods, in a book I read about the place, the author said that, when she escaped, the concept of religion was alien to her but she came to understand what it was because North Koreans are raised to worship the Kims like it's a religion in itself.

The citizens are kept weak and downtrodden by famine and high expenses on food and the Kims perpetuate the idea that they are the people's saviours. There will never be an uprising from within NK itself.

This is true.Some even believe that the Supreme Leader has supernatural powers.

That's what a lack of communication with the outside world and being raised in what is essential a national cult will do to a populace though.

Kim Il-Sung is literally seen is a savior and a god for taking power in the post-WW2 vacuum and Jong-Il and Un have just built on that legacy.

well he does to all intents and purposes. He has the power over life and death, he decides if you have done well or should be punished. To someone who has not known anything else, and that is 99.9% of the NK population, that is a god.
