Why am I being taxed so much

So since I’ve started working I’ve been getting taxed quite a bit

My net income is £2400 over 3 months however I have been taxed £500 in total (£1900), surely this is far too much?

LukeB 29-11-2017 11:12 PM

I think you should talk to your boss about it, some people do get taxed so much but in April you can get it all back if you have been overpaying.

Will. 29-11-2017 11:12 PM

This month I earnt £930 however £220 was taken away in tax so I only received £710.

Oliver_W 29-11-2017 11:14 PM

Well you've been taxed about 20% of your earnings, which is the standard rate, but you'll get a tasty rebate if it's too much, or if you don't end up earning enough to pay tax (£10k) so it's all good.

Will. 29-11-2017 11:17 PM

Yeah it’s £550 in total I’ve been taxed over 3 months.

Last month I only earnt £500 but they still took a further £100 away in tax. :skull:

Wizard. 29-11-2017 11:19 PM

They probably have the wrong Tax Code for you so you will get it back.

Will. 29-11-2017 11:20 PM

Yeah probably

So if I don’t earn over £11500 by next April I’ll get her back?

£100 is 20% of £500, so you're paying the standard tax rate. Does your contract have the possibility/flexibility for full time work? If so, you probably have the standard tax code.

Yes, 5th April 2018 is when the next tax year ends and you will have to fill in a something to claim it back

are you doing the same hours each week and what are you on hourly?

You will. Not sure when - a friend of mine got a tax rebate in like early November!

Will. 29-11-2017 11:23 PM

I was doing 35 hours (contracted 20) a week

And now I’m doing 24 at Waitrose when I start

You shouldn't have to fill anything out I used to get cheques sent to me randomly in the post.

I'll clarify - the money she was sent was for "April to April", but I think they just didn't get round to telling her about it until November.

did they start at the same time as you?

you would have earned over 5/6 grand by the end of the tax year.

just think of the positive, just think of all money you will get back

20% isn't the standard rate that's basic rate ie emergency tax.

Phone the tax office Will and tell them you've been placed on an emergency tax code.
