Uni advice
 

Hi all,

Just making this thread as I'm off to university next year to live in halls. I just wanted to pick the brains of some real people who I actually 'know' who've gone to university (and places like The Student Room seem TOXIC). to give some proper advice. Is there anything you think i should know about moving into halls that isn't exactly publicised? Will I really not eat? Is life in halls really as good as its made out? Is it wise to get a job? Just anything you think I should know/you'd have told yourself if you'd known in hindsight.

Join a Facebook group of your uni halls in you can find one.
Go to loads of flat parties during freshers and get steaming so you can make loads of new pals!
If you want a job try and get one thats 16 hours a week MAX because any more than that and you'll have like no time to do your actual work/study and also have a life.

That's just off the top of my head, if I think of anything else I'll post more here :)

no one cleans up after themselves, your kitchen will be disgusting. even the weekly cleaner refused to sort out ours by late november.

Life in halls is what you make it. It's seriously important to be mentally prepared for freshers week imo. Be as sociable as you can and try and meet a lot of people and do a lot of things

I haven't been to uni, but I know many people who have.

It's hard work. A lot of studying and effort involved (although I'm sure you know that already), so if you're thinking of getting a job, make sure it's only part-time or else you will be too tired and won't have time for socializing and studying.

Just because everyone goes out and parties all the time doesn't mean you have to. Of course everyone does because they initially want to fit in, but you'll find other people who don't and enjoy doing other things besides drinking.

The food situation...you will probably find yourself buying/making the easy and cheap stuff. Like noodles, pasta, soup etc.

More advice for assignments than social stuff, but it is gold.

Youre supposed to read and then make an essay out of some of the **** that you've seen HOWEVER you literally can make an essay saying whatever you want, copy and paste each claim you made in to 'google scholar' and you can almost guarantee that some researcher somewhere at some time has made the same claim (with evidence to back it). Reference them and pretend you read the journal before you began your essay writing.

Also use an online reference-maker. I think you gotta pay for the good ones nowadays which is sad, but worth it. Cos nobody cba to actually learn to reference.

I've genuinely just saved you 100 hours of your next school year at the least. You're welcome.


Also also, don't buy milk, ketchup, cutlery etc. It will get stolen. Steal someone else's instead, top dog.

For a stress-free third year at uni, spend the first two buying kebabs from various different takeaway places. That way you can go in to third year knowing which kebab place to live at and pray to etc

It's luck of the draw, some people I know got put with horrors, I got put with two horrors and two people I still talk to

I didn't live in halls (independent housing fish~) but everytime I went to one of them (admittedly it was to drink/smoke so I didn't care) they were a state, lol.

Depends entirely on the people you get to share with, really... but I do wish I'd got a place in halls because it seemed a lot more "part of the experience" and stress-free than having to make independent rent/deposit demands.

Job depends on your financial status/how much grants/loans you're getting ofc... loads of people I lived with got one by the end of the first year though even if it was just waiting tables, bartending or shop assistant work. Usually wise, and if it's a major city you should be able to find jobs flexible enough to allow for uni to come first. Oh and if you have to deal with Student Finance then... good luck :love: they're evil.

Just a quick question too, I was gonna post a separate thread but thought I'd just ask in here, can you get transferred into the same halls/flat with pre-existing friends or nah?

What are you studying? If you're going to be referencing academic journals, in most cases you can just read the Abstract and Summary, for the first year anyway. They like it when you use direct quotes though, so it might be an idea to skimread the articles, or at least Ctrl+F to look for key words. Referencing in the text itself is always Blah Blah (Name, Year) or According to Name (Year) Blah Blah or similar.
