I feel like this is a turning point for Big Brother

I don’t Really know how to express what I want to say here.. but I just caught up with last night’s highlights and it’s really struck me the level of respect being shown in that house.

I know there are people on here who think there are too many “issues” being discussed and it’s all a little serious. But as a 34 year old gay man it’s just really nice to see LGBT issues discussed with such maturity on a show like Big Brother. As little as ten years ago it would have been perfectly acceptable for headlines about India to include flippant transphobic slurs. Obviously there are still the unenlightened few but you can see people changing.

The conversation. last night about Stephen Gatley, and Andrew just casually using the word CIS like it’s the most normal thing in the world.. it’s just really lovely to see.

I just think unless you’ve grown up in a world that quietly mocks you and who you are. A world where you are so under represented in the media that you just take whatever scraps are thrown at you.. you’ll never understand how brilliant it is that we’ve reached this stage.

I’m glad you’ve been able to find smth amazing out of this series:blush:

Bc I haven’t holy **** such a lack of dynamic characters thus far ik it’s early but all the interactions are the same

It certainly makes a change from Bed Wetting, crusty knickers and spitting in food.

Totally agree, can't really say it any better than you already have but it is really nice to see. At it's best the show should represent current realities of life and ways of thinking about things, and I feel like the show has been at it's worst for a long time. This series is very different though.

Don’t get me wrong.. I appreciate Big Brother’s trashy side. There’s still a place for jacuzzi orgies and custard cream dipping in this brave new world!

Withano 12-01-2018 08:19 PM

Yeh it makes a change. I think I would want more of a 'best of both worlds' vibe, because this might get mentally exhausting (more fun tasks will help). But i'll take this over some of the ****e they put out in recent years.

I'm loving this series, it really feels social experiment-ish again. I hate the word CIS though, sounds like some sort of growth :worry: where did that even come from?

They just need to ditch those unnecessarily long transitions with shots of the empty jacuzzi.

Me too.I always think of StarWars for some reason:laugh:

I would never identify as ‘CIS’ it’s just like a title that’s been put on people by someone or other.

Maru 12-01-2018 08:24 PM

You're right. That's been on my mind lately when watching too. But truth be told, the media is not really real life. I mean technically it's still representational, but it's super polished so not quite the same. I feel like it lags behind reality. I think it's more that we've become less self-conscious of ourselves and our viewpoints, that yes, still polished, but not afraid to speak out now about these controversial topics ie #nofilter... and yeah it's all kinda hit the fan with politics now becoming so mainstream and hyper-partisan... but I can understand where this is an improvement across the board as now more people are actually talking about topics instead of stepping around them.

It just means non-trans  I don't know where it came from but I'd guess it's only more prominent a term nowadays because of more conversations about trans issues

Northern Monkey 12-01-2018 08:30 PM

German sexologist Volkmar Sigusch used the neologism cissexual (zissexuell in German) in a peer-reviewed publication. In his 1998 essay "The Neosexual Revolution", he cites his two-part 1991 article "Die Transsexuellen und unser nosomorpher Blick" ("Transsexuals and our nosomorphic view") as the origin of the term.[3] He also used the term in the title of a 1995 article, "Transsexueller Wunsch und zissexuelle Abwehr" (or: "Transsexual desire and cissexual defense").[4]

I would agree but at the same time I don’t know whether the viewers would accept a series as calm as this for the civilian run or even another celeb series

But let's be honest all the previous series have been the same with young straight people arguing and snogging for headlines.

I'm a massive gay and usually hate all this talking about issues **** but I'm really loving this series and watching the straight people and gay/trans interacting like they would in the outside with no filter....it's very real. NO WARNINGS for speaking their minds...FINALLY! If this was cbb15 giinuwine would have been removed incase he was seen as "offensive" simply for not being attracted to a trans woman.

BUT I can see why people want more drama and if they only talk about the same issues for a month it will probably become irritating but there's more to these housemates than meets the eye they are very diverse and I think there are going to be actual real arguments really soon which is by far more interesting.

Remember 90% of this house is still straight so just because these issues are being discussed it's not the lgbt community shoving it down anyone's throat....so to speak.

susie q 12-01-2018 08:50 PM

I like the discussions they are having, without sinking to personal insults, and derogatory language. They are showing that it is possible to have different opinions, but still get on with each other. The arguements will happen just by virtue of them being closeted together for so long. The drama will happen.
