I have seen an awful video today of one of the horses killed this week in this 'sport' the front leg was actually snapped the bone showing and leg bent wrong way up, I have always thought horse racing was cruel, this week 6 horses have died,

My question is do you think it's cruel? If not why ? needless to say,I do, and I am surprised so many people partake in it and condone it.That horse must have been in complete agony.

no

jaxie 17-03-2018 04:33 PM

I do think it's cruel but what is worse is how these beautiful animals are discarded after they have served their purpose.

AnnieK 17-03-2018 04:45 PM

My god that picture is awful Kaz....

Yes ,that's another thing jaxie, it's like hunting dogs etc, they are treated like objects.

Maru 17-03-2018 04:54 PM

Yes

I know Annie ,the video is worse, I really hate that they suffer like that.

Yes it is, and that's a fact with many receipts. We've had a discussion about it previously.
It's the same as circus with animals and it should have the same destiny.

montblanc 17-03-2018 04:59 PM

yes

user104658 17-03-2018 05:11 PM

Yes and I work in the betting industry. Jumps especially are awful. Greyhounds, too.

Jamie89 17-03-2018 05:30 PM

Yes. Pigeon racing as well! When I was younger one fell in our garden because it had a damaged wing so we looked after it till it healed. My dad called the owner (there were contact details attached to its leg) and he told him that if he did return it he wouldn't have any use for it anymore as it was damaged. It was bittersweet when it did heal and was able to fly away, knowing that it would probably fly back to the owner and to it's death

Do you think it's cruel to send humans to work, were they can and do suffer injury and death?

Should we ban work for humans?

Humans have a choice Alf , horses don't.The only cruelty I see is dealt by humans:shrug:

y.winter 17-03-2018 05:48 PM

Do you ask humans if they want to work or not?
Do you ask horses if they want to go through this physical hell?

Is a choice being given?

MTVN 17-03-2018 05:59 PM

No, great sport

Race horses lead much better lives than most horses

If I want a roof over my head and food in my belly, I have no choice but to work for it. Same for an horse.

You can choose what to do for work, no one will push you (and of they do, then is it right?)

And believe it or not, horses don't need you nor human help to survive. Go to the wild and see how animals happen to exist, naturally.

Kizzy 17-03-2018 06:27 PM

Shocking pic, is 6 racehorses a week the norm! I had no idea thought it was just a freak accident :(

Until something happens to them that deems them unsuitable for racing. It doesn't take a broken leg to have a racehorse shot. When a race horse can no longer race, its worth more dead to its owner than alive.

Yes undoubtedly. That poor horse. It has always broken my heart how so many die every year like that and came as quite a shock when I first heard that. There should be tighter controls on any sports involving animals. It isn’t right.

DemolitionRed 17-03-2018 06:37 PM

Yes its cruel.
Race horses are backed before their skeleton has fully formed ensuring most ex race horses that are lucky enough to be sold on will have ongoing and often crippling back pain.

Race horses are purely a commodity. They are only worth what they win in a race or what the insurers pay out on their death.

Fit race horses eat an excessive amount of oats which often cause a condition called azoturia. This makes the horse go into excruciating cramp where its body ties up.

That's not quite true though is it MTVN ? many horses are treated cruelly to make them jump when being trained, even electric prods were used not sure if they are still allowed but behind the scenes is not as pretty as some like to think, there are numerous stories about this, I really don't think anything about it is 'great' except maybe the amount of money that passes hands. So many are injured because they are far too young to be worked so hard, but the bigger issue is the thousands that are slaughtered each year because they were not fast enough, didn't jump high enough, just didn't make the grade.

DemolitionRed 17-03-2018 06:53 PM

It should also be said, polo is an incredibly cruel sport. The training process for these horses (called ponies) is so harsh, that it loses all its natural spirit and becomes zombified. I worked for a couple of weeks in a polo yard but I couldn't stand it and still have nightmares about that experience.
