Will make zero difference, no one plays casino (roulette / blackjack) any more, 99% of the cash in the FOBT's comes from £1 / £2 spin B2 slots which will be unaffected by a £2 max stake.

£2 per spin on slots, a spin takes a couple of seconds, I've seen people lose £500+ in a couple of hours.

Though since you ask; NO ONE would bet £2 on casino games like roulette or blackjack, so if a max £2 stake is implemented those games will die, and a large percentage of casino FOBT players will switch to £2 slots. Slots have a significantly higher profit margin than roulette or especially blackjack.

£2 slots are 100% the product that is being pushed currently. They are the most profitable, by far, or in other words, they are what people are losing money on... and they will be unaffected by legislation. They are also designed around the pavlovian response (flashing lights, lots of sounds, quick spin time, small risk, small reward, repeated very frequently) which means they are waaay more addictive than Casino.

Roulette was a big deal... 5 years ago... it just isn't any more. Useless legislation.

I know, I manage one, I know those damned machines inside out :joker:. Off the top of my head, the shop has approx. 1.2million / year turnover on FOBT's, and the huge majority of it is £2 max stakes slots (category B3 games) which will not be affected by the proposed legislation. The crackdown on B2 games with large stakes is designed to appease campaigners, whilst not actally helping problem gamblers, or affecting the profitability of FOBT gaming machines.

As for "why" that is? The government makes several billion £££ in tax revenue from them every year. They absolutely don't want people to stop using them. By eliminating high stakes, they can seem to be doing the right thing whilst, in fact, doing absolutely nothing.

Ten pound fortune spins can either make or break you...online slots are the best though, easier to win on.

2020 at the earliest I would imagine, by which point I'll be out of the game anyway :joker:. It's a complicated one really; it barely affects my shop at all (for reasons described above, plus we're a large profit-making shop OTC [over-the-counter] and not dependant on gaming machines to stay in profit. However, it will affect the upper level company line in ways that mean "machine shops" (shops that barely take anything OTC and depend on high staking machine customers) are likely to close, since most bookmakers changed their shop policy to "profit driven" over "brand awareness" a few years back (shops used to stay open at a loss for the sake of presence and brand loyalty).

The REALLY ironic thing about all of this, is that the FOBT addicts will simply move online, and the bookmakers will refocus (even further) online... and that is EXACTLY where the major addiction problems have been for the last few years! Forget about losing £100 a spin on the highstreet; you can do it on your phone from your bed at 2am. But people don't see it happening there so they're not focussed on it. An invisible addiction in your pocket.

Other times when regulations changes have come in, they usually initially say one year and then end up granting extensions along the way. It definitely won't be 2050 but I'd still say early 2020 personally.
