I think I have a Pavlovian response to the PSX startup. I used to play imported (non-PAL) / copied games using the "swap-disk" method... which basically involved keeping the lid open and manually "swapping" a PAL game with the game you wanted to play, manually, while spinning, at the exact second that the startup transitioned from the white screen to the black screen.
(This worked because the protection checks occur during the white screen, but the game itself doesn't load any data until the black... so it's checking the first disk then loading the swapped one)
This was a feat of timing and manual dexterity. If you mistimed it, the white Sony screen (and the first part of the sound) would play and then it would just freeze. If you got it right, it would "think" for a second, then play the black PS logo screen would appear, and the sound would complete.
So basically, that sound is the sound of early-teen success at getting Xenogears (which never got a PAL release) to load :joker:.
