Could we see a "messiah" in the modern era?
 

So I had this random thought... could a modern day Jesus actually truly arise in the era we are living (without being a crazy cult leader that isn't taken too seriously)? ... since the world is not exactly "fertile" ground for a messiah to appear... or maybe it is? I don't know. Just had that interesting thought... it did happen with the Mormons.

I think our part of our culture's "obsession" with politics has a lot to do with our tendencies towards religion, actually. A lot of the same tribalism that humans tend towards, that staunch moralism, is evident with politcs... So I have to wonder if the same impulses that used to be "addressed" with religion, we've now put that energy into politics... except it has become much more malignant than religion imo as there are less limitations and more temptation towards tribal behavior. Though I wouldn't be surprised if younger folk thought differently, not really having lived the difference...

I may make a poll later, I don't really feel like putting together the options atm... too tedious right now

...yeah I do think the world needs a Messiah right now, Maru...that would be amazing...sadly though I fear the welcome and reception they might get would be more...no immigration here thank you very much, Messiah culture isn’t welcomed here....and that clothing you’re wearing..?...for goodness sake that just won’t do at all...do you intend to have dental care at our expense, is it your intention to need any NHS care at all in your time here...the world is all very complicated for Messiahs in this modern time...

We wont always go on like this, it was written that wars, famine ,floods, upset in the middle East, violence and crime,would come to pass, they are all getting worse, we cannot carry on like this,something biblical will happen and I think America will be at the heart of it. Just my thoughts.

If a Jesus figure arrived in this day and age claiming he was the son of god, he'd be sectioned I'd imagine

If 5 of us Tibbies were sitting together watching TV and Jesus Christ materialised right in front of us and told us;

"I have chosen you to witness that I exist and that I have appeared to you all here tonight in the flesh. I want you all to go out and tell your friends, your families and the public of what you have witnessed so they may know the truth."

How many of us would have the courage to actually go out and tell what would only be the truth?

And how long would it be if any one of us was brave enough to do so, before we were jeered, physically attacked or sectioned for our efforts?

He doesn't - that is left to man's own Free Will and where Faith comes in..

Outside of the Bible, I don't know that he HAS appeared to anyone because I don't know whether those that claim that he has are truthful, deliberate deceivers, or delusional nutters.

Fair enough, the whole faith thing just makes no sense to me though, why the big mystery why do you have to abandon your logic and just "believe" in order for "god" to reward you? What's the actual point? anyway look I don't want to come across as mocking, people have their beliefs etc these are just my thoughts on religion in general

Yeah secularism does tend to way over-emphasize our individual capability for "good" and even our "bad". After all, that thinking is more black and white. When actually, individuals are often equally bad/good (in a psychological sense), and it sort of balances itself outself out in many cases... of course obviously that varies, there are people who embrace mostly evil purposes... there's no middle of the road in today's thinking. That's what's such a missed opportunity imo... humility is a liberating trait if we could somehow embrace that again culturally I think...

Though would I personally actually "look for" a Messiah in the physical sense? No. I think that sort of thing can be found internally and reached a better way... but like kirk said, if such an individual would appear physically or that we saw the emergence of an individual that resonated at that sense... could we accept it without trying to tear its arms off? We tend to be hostile towards things we don't understand. Especially if mob mentality kicked in... I think it would have to be after a certain sequence of events... MLK I do tend to think of his symbolism in this way... he did bring to us revelation as well as offer a mending of our culture...

What is free will? If someone/god has to give it to you, then by the very nature of the act, it's not free will.

Free Will is the ability to make decisions for oneself. We all have it.
