France shocked by video of woman being slapped by harasser

A French student has spoken out after she was harassed by a man in a Paris street and then hit in the face when she told him to stop.

Marie Laguerre shared CCTV video of the man slapping her outside a cafe in the north-east of the capital.

The video has gone viral and coincides with a government push to impose on-the-spot fines for street harassment.

"The first fines should be handed out this autumn," said Equalities Minister Marlène Schiappa.

Offenders will have to pay between €90 (£80; $105) and €750 under a package of measures that was backed by French MPs in May and is set to complete its passage through parliament this week.

The initiative has resonated among French women as the #MeToo movement and its French equivalent #BalanceTonPorc ("rat on your pig") have gathered pace.

Yes indeed, this is on the news non-stop. And if you know us French people, you know we hold on very tight to the "metoo" campaign so this has a big impact in the country.

The girl gave an interview today, she is brave and wants to display an exemple, because had she fought him, he could have pressed charges and won against her.

I don't want to be in his shoes when they find out who he is, Twitter and all social media are after him. And tonight the Paris court of justice announced they opened a case to find him. That guy is gross and couldn't handle a girl talking back to him, he should be hardly punished.

i would hope that i would have tackled him to the ground and made a citizen arrest

i did it once on the tube (it did not end well)

there were enough men there

typical France

Good for her and I hope the cowardly prat gets treated similarly and slapped hard by every burly Frenchman who recognises him when they happen to meet him in the street.

More is the pity that the guy in the white shirt did not hit him with that chair.

..I’m glad metoo is something that’s being held onto very tightly in France, Remy...France is a great country, eh.....and yeah, she’s a brave lady..sexual harassment is something that sometimes needs so much bravery, sadly...in general it’s just too often not taken seriously enough...I have to still have a little rant though...just because this is a sexual harasser on the street, an every day sexual harasser if you like..?...there are still those sexual harassers in power, people in high places whose sexual harassment can go back a few years as well...who can be excused rather than condemned as this man rightfully is...hope fully all will be considered equal one day...one day...#themtoo....

Hell, Parmy - I never thought of that but now I feel you may be right. How pissed off I am with Fake News and Set-ups.

nope

that women got a right thump

no set up there

if it was a setup it was a pretty silly idea. The guy that hit the girl is likely to get a few punches coming his way for quite a long time
