Opera singer Montserrat Caballe, best known for her duet with Freddie Mercury on the song “Barcelona”, has died at the age of 85.

Caballe had been in poor health and was admitted to hospital in Barcelona last month because of a gall bladder problem, according to the Spanish media. A spokesman for Hospital Sant Pau announced her death early Saturday.

In a career spanning five decades, she starred in 90 opera roles with nearly 4,000 stage performances.

The Spanish soprano had spells with the Basel Opera and Bremen Opera, and performed alongside Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo.

Renowned for her bel canto technique, her breakthrough performance came in 1965 when she took on the challenging role of Lucrezia Borgia in Donizetti’s opera at the Carnegie Hall in New York City.

She gave lots of pleasure to lots of people didn't she Nicky, and she was adored in return. Not a bad way to live your life, doing what you love and what you're talented at, and being appreciated for it.

The Barcelona duet with Freddie Mercury makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up every time I hear it. If you discount the rest of her career and just focus on that one song... what a legacy to leave behind you.

operatic music at first was more entertainment for the upperclass/wealthy, and i am glad it is getting a wider audience more and more for everyone to enjoy, cause operatic music to me is just divine

this is a fact what one of our dutch operatic singers Tania Kross has said, and what she is bringing to a wider audience, she also enjoyed Estonia this year how they did send operatic pop to eurovision

this is Tania, with musical actor/singer Tommie Christiaan (he notably won a talent show search for Zorro the Musical) their version of Barcelona that really came close to the Original of Freddie and Montserrat

What a wonderful version, Nicky. And I agree, music should not be elitist, music is for everyone.

yes, and hopefully her legacy will continue through her daughter Montserrat Martí who is also a operatic singer

but also it gives you shivers like born in Barcelona, had a classic duet called Barcelona and died in Barcelona

i guess the 2 football clubs from Barcelona could hold a moment of silence before their matches this weekend
