Spotify and Netflix could be blocked for UK citizens if 'no-deal' Brexit goes ahead

Quote:

Spotify music, Netflix shows and content on other online streaming services could be blocked to British citizens on holiday in Europe if the UK leaves the EU with no deal, the government has admitted.

At the moment, ‘portability’ regulation ensures that streaming services are not allowed to discriminate between someone when they are at home in the UK or if they are travelling to the rest of Europe. Users can go on holiday to France and still have full access to the Netflix films and Spotify music they get at home, for instance.

But a tranche of newly-released official documents about the anticipated impact of a no-deal Brexit includes a paper that suggests the portability arrangement that exists with the bloc would “cease to apply”.

At least they wouldn't be blocked from within the UK itself, like the misleading headline is trying to suggest.

Who goes hundreds or thousands of miles on holiday to a foreign country to watch Netflix?
Do it at home before you go

Glenn. 12-10-2018 10:55 PM

Just download the shows you want and watch them offline like a normal person

If you are paying hundreds of pounds to travel to Spain to watch 13 Reasons why then you need your money taken off you

Even in the most exciting of places people don't do "holiday things" for every waking moment, especially if it's a family holiday. But Netflix isn't the only option, people can bung a few DVDs into their luggage, download stuff onto a USB stick if they're not taking a laptop/tablet, or just watch the telly.

The article in the o/p is obviously a pile of bollocks but even if it were true it wouldn't be a disaster.

Or God forbid go outside or go visit a friend.. there's a lot more to life than consuming media. I actually think such a disruption could probably be beneficial for society ... :spin: Or maybe there will be another baby boom...

But when you're on holiday, you sometimes just wanna watch something to unwind after a long day, and depending on where you are there might not be friends locally.

The article is only talking about UK Netflix accounts working in the EU, not Netflix being banned in the UK - anyone who believes the latter is possible needs to loosen their crash helmet.

I'm not sure what they're on about...
I have an Israeli account for both Netflix and Spotify and they worked for me (as they should) internationally during my trips over the last couple of years - in the US, across several countries in Europe and in Asia.

LeatherTrumpet 13-10-2018 03:16 PM

JoshBB 13-10-2018 03:43 PM
