The Scottish government is to review the law around animal culling after an American TV hunter angered thousands of people by shooting and posing with animals on the island of Islay.

Larysa Switlyk, who describes herself as a "professional huntress" posted pictures on Twitter next to dead animals, including a goat, stag and sheep, during a trip to the Inner Hebrides islands.

Twitter users condemned the images as "sickening" and "truly abhorrent" but the Scottish Government said responsible and appropriate culling of some wild animals, including deer and goats, is not illegal.

However in response to the growing online criticism, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will consider whether the laws need to be changed.

larysaunleashedBeautiful wild goat here on the Island of Islay in Scotland. Such a fun hunt!! They live on the edge of the cliffs of the island and know how to hide well. We hunted hard for a big one for 2 days and finally got on this group. Made a perfect 200 yard shot and dropped him with the @gunwerks and @nightforce_optics ! ( Good thing too because he could have ran off the cliff into the water). Ever interested in hunting Scotland and doing some whisky tours, email larysa@detailcompany.com !

The problem is, this is not illegal and business.

Beautiful animals but labelled as a pest that needs culling.

Hundreds and hundreds of deer are killed in a cull and people pay to kill them.

A sheep? For one... wouldn't that most likely belong to a farm? Isn't that poaching or summat?

Also surely you could literally walk up to a sheep and stab it, they just stand there, not exactly an impressive hunt :umm2:

Toy Soldier 26-10-2018 07:39 AM

That said, I was over on the lovely Isle of Arran a few weeks back where it's pheasant hunting season... they transfer in / breed thousands of them for great hunters to shoot... except I swear to god we could have gotten 10 - 15 in the car, because they just ****ing wander right out in front of the wheels constantly. Again, how can this be "hunting"? They practically walk up to you and commit suicide.

Some rando from the city might be proud of killing sheep and goats, but how can it be anything but routine for a "professional" "huntress" ?

Pest or not, these animals don’t deserve to be killed by the sickos.

tbh all hunting for fun should be banned
by all means cull when necessary but let local wildlife wardens etc do it and strip it of any "glamour"
but then Scotland and other countries get good income out of it so they won't do it, at least not yet

That example is of a hideous (probably not even Scottish or a resident) private landowner allowing these cretins to hunt on "his land" for profit

I would imagine that the good people of Islay are sickened

Might be a stupid question, but how did that American get that gun in to Scotland in the first place?! As if thats allowed?! :omgno:

she would have applied in advance for a licence to Hunt from the Police and landowner. The gun is hers and if its legal then no problemo

Licences
Owners of firearms and shotguns must be in possession of the appropriate firearms certificate, issued by the local police authority under strict scrutiny. Anyone hunting game must also be in possession of a Game Licence, available from post offices (this does not, however, apply to wildfowl).

Dumb idea

btw, channel 4 news had a piece on this last night and they rightly pointed out that a similar photo (same island, also a goat) but of a male hunter appeared not long ago but there was no fuss.

hunting for fun aside, is it worse when a woman does it? is it bc women are associated with nurturing life not killing it?

So you can either organise a cull at great expense and fork out for someone to do it or you can have wealthy Americans be the ones who pay to do it and they'll also contribute to the local economy

No brainer for landowners and local authorities
