Do you want the PS5 to be backwards compatible?

I know that the Console is still quite a while away yet, but I am interested in the Forum Members responses to this topic.

Me personally don't like the remakes to the classic PS1 and PS2 Games on the PS4, so I would like for the PS5 to preferably be able to be backwards compatible with all of it's previous Consoles, and heck even the Handhelds.

I do understand that my wish would be too expensive to make, so I'd be willing to compromise and accept the PS1 & PS2 Games being able to be played on the PS5. But I also understand that Sony doesn't have to do a thing that I say.:joker:

Anyway would you like the PS5 to be backwards compatible so you don't have to pay loads of money to buy back Games that you already own?

Not something that bothers me. I prefer playing older games on the original consoles (with an old TV). PS1 games in particular don’t look too pretty stretched over a 55inch screen.

I’d settle for a Virtual Console set up but obviously full backwards compatibility is the dream. I kind of get ps3/4 not being possible due to the hardware, but I can’t imagine ps1/2 would be that hard?

It’d definitely cash in on the nostalgia rides people have been having with consoles lately and maybe even combat some of the bad press the ps1 classic has gotten.

Make it powerful enough for proper PS1 and 2 emulation with upscaling / anti-aliasing options etc., and keep the chip architecture the same so that PS4 games just work natively, maybe boost some framerates from 30 to 60 with patches.

Unfortunately PS3 is going to be the black sheep for quite a while longer because of the weird custom processor; it's pretty much impossible to emulate without actually including the physical chip (which would bump production costs way up).

However... There are already PS4 versions of a lot of the real classic PS3 titles so it shouldn't matter too much.

Microsoft are going to have full compatibility with all future consoles so Sony would waaaannaaaa

The basic components of the PS4 and the Xbone are pretty generic and that seems to be the way forward with the hardware, so there's no reason for them not to do backwarda compatibility really. Future consoles are likely to just be the same basic thing but with upgraded parts, like upgrading a PC, so older games should still work on them (and potentially run better).

I just hope they start putting decent cooling in the damn things because everything released this year makes my PS4Pro sound like it's trying to take off. Its gotten to the point that it's so loud, I have to play games on headphones because the noise drowns out voices etc. on speakers. :umm2:

I'm actually trying to figure out how far away it can be for the controllers to still be reliable, so that I can run a long HDMI cable and keep the console itself in another room. Ridiculous :hmph:

Same, my Pro is also super loud for some games, appearantly if you open it up and replace the thermal paste it will fix it but I'm too afraid haha

I might give it a go. I've heard there's a different fan you can buy, too. It's so bad it's genuinely unplayable without a headset.

Yeeeeees please at least back to PS3. I'd play the old COD games in particular soooo much if they were compatible with PS4 :bored:

Sadly, the PS3 uses a custom Sony chip architecture which makes it unlikely that any suture console will be backwards compatible until they become powerful enough to do it as emulation (which will be a decade at least).

Even PS2 emulation is still not very good.

Aren't most PS1 and PS2 games available as ROMs and emulators? Sony have nothing to lose by implementing backwards compatibility. Maybe there could be something like on the 3DS, where you can download the old games?

PS1 emulation has been working near-flawlessly for 5+ years (I actually remember playing FF8 on an emulator when I was in University halls... which was 12 years ago :omgno: ).

PS2 emulation is still hit-and-miss and currently needs a high-end gaming PC (so will almost certainly be beyond the capabilities of the next Playstation console). That's UNLESS they include PS2 hardware of course, if the demand was high enough (and the manufacturing cost low enough) they might. The launch PS3 was backwards compatible with PS2 games, as it had a PS2 processor buried in there somewhere, but it was literally only the first couple of batches manufactured, they removed it after that to reduce manufacturing costs.

MattySlug 20-02-2019 09:02 AM

I cracked it when the PS3 removed that emotion thingo that played PS2 games.
The PS3's that can play PS2 games still sell for heaps!

So some years ago Instead of upgrading to a PS3 I got a second hand 360.
Now I own many, many 360 games and a few XB1 Games... But I didn't buy many at all new though.

A recent patent suggests the PS5 will play PS1-PS4 games too

I still stand by what I said earlier in the thread; PS4 is highly likely due to the standardised processor architecture they now use (the PS4 -> PS5 jump will be like a PC upgrade, not entirely "alien" hardware) and there's a good chance that it'll be powerful enough to successfully emulate all PS1 and PS2 games... but I strongly suspect that PS3 will be missing.

It's very unlikely to be able to software-emulate the CELL (the uniquely architectured PS3 CPU) and they already discovered that it wasn't financially sensible to put physical legacy chips into new-gen consoles with the PS2 -> PS3 generation. They tried it for a brief production run and then changed course. I doubt they'd do it again.

I wouldn't "not want it" but I voted no because it's not necessarily important to me  I don't have hordes of old PS2/3 games lying around in boxes.

It's not really important to me because I don't replay games that I've finished like I used to (as I don't even have time to play all the NEW games I want to play!) and goddamn it I'm committed to actually finishing games once I've started them these days :fist:.

Toy Soldier 20-02-2019 01:18 PM

...that said I'm going to vote "Yes" because I want to play SSX Tricky on a modern console. I mean ideally I want them to remaster (NOT remake) it but I'd settle for PS2 backwards compatibility.

Ramsay 20-02-2019 05:28 PM

I voted no because the answer is obviously yes
