Chairman of Germany's anti-migrant AfD party is 'beaten nearly to death'

Utterly disgusting, similar to ISIS or the IRA where people think they are SO right that they are willing to kill people who disagree with their blinkered worldview :bored:

  • Elected German politician Frank Magnitz attacked in the street
  • Magnitz is MP and chairman for anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD)
  • The party claims the assault on Magnitz was an assassination attempt

A German MP has been seriously injured in a 'politically motivated' gang attack in the north of the country.

Frank Magnitz, leader in Bremen of the anti-immigration populist party Alternative for Germany (AfD), was assaulted in the city centre on Monday afternoon.

The AfD party published a photo of Magnitz lying injured on a hospital bed, claiming three masked men had carried out the attack.

They hit him with a piece of wood until he was unconscious and then kicked him on the ground,' the party said in a statement, adding that a construction worker had intervened to stop the assault.

'Today is a dark day for democracy in Germany.'

Bremen Police said that 'given the victim's work, we believe that this is a politically motivated act.'

AfD leader Joerg Meuthen tweeted that Magnitz was 'beaten almost to death' in a 'cowardly and sickening' attack.

Johannes Kahrs, an MP from the Social Democrats, junior partners in the ruling coalition, said 'violence is never acceptable' and that 'extremism in any form is rubbish'. He wished Magnitz a quick recovery.

doubt that, he is from anti-migrant party, so i think the one who beat him up was a refugee or someone who supports refugees

but anyway it was a amateur (very sure about that) cause professional assassins won't beat someone up, but using a gun with silencer or knife

I think lt is on to something.

Livia 08-01-2019 11:25 AM

This is a very low-key story. I think if a bunch of Germans had beaten a refugee almost to death it would have been a lead story.

Twosugars 08-01-2019 12:41 PM

a nasty, stupid and counterproductive way of making a political point
hope he recovers fully.

Why make it into a competition? anyone getting attacked like that is bad.

Tom4784 08-01-2019 01:17 PM

Honestly? I find this story very suspect, especially in the light of the recent Brazil election and how Bolsonaro pretty much only won because he was attacked.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if the attackers are never found and the party bolsters in terms of support. Not saying that the victim is behind his own attack but I'd be suspicious of other people in the party.

I wouldn't say it's unrealistic to see incidents like this happen more often, an 'assassination' (bit much in this case, I don't think a would be assassin would use a piece of wood as a weapon) attempt is great for votes.

Is there an election coming up? the pictures look horrific, if this is someone within his own party they are insane

How do you know the Brazil chap, who was stabbed in public won his election based on that event?

I dont think any polls were taken?

Common sense, he was an outsider in the polls before the attack and his poll numbers surged after the attack.

You know the answers to the questions you ask and that acting like you don't won't get the reaction you want.

Livia 09-01-2019 09:46 AM

Strong odour of denial in this thread.

Because it apparently is a competition. See Dezzy's opinion... he even intimates this man's party may have been behind his own attack to garner votes. I see that as quite a sinister bit of denial, but frankly, not unexpected.

He was considered an outsider before the attack and he became the frontrunner after the attack. Let's face it, you know the truth, you're just trying to get a reaction.

This statement, unsupported by any evidence other than your own interpretation reads like this:

Left of centre: Victim
Right of centre: Deserves it.

You were the first one in this thread to start comparing attacks and coverage of attacks. regarding Dezzys post, he seemed to be speculating about who was responsible?

Yes, Dezzy is just speculating that the right wing party attacked their own man.

Nothing. You were explaining Dezzy's speculation for me.

I only wanted the ten minute argument. Seems I'm stuck with the full half hour today.
