Just watched the first couple of eps of this and it’s a scream, who else is watching?

Headie 22-01-2019 02:11 AM

Watched the first two eps so far, it's a cute show, didn't think I'd like it but I'm quite into it! Eric is hilarious <3

Also I KNEW I recognised the girl with the neck brace from ep 2:

Favouritest netflix original series that I've seen in a while

Smithy 22-01-2019 10:12 PM

Omg Eric in ep 5 :bawling:

Shaun 23-01-2019 05:27 AM

Just watched the first two (or three? idk) episodes and it's pretty great. Reminds me a little of shows like Beautiful People, My Mad Fat Diary, Derry Girls etc - genuinely funny portrayals of teenagers that don't rely on the same old cheap #ladbanter. Definitely not that realistic lol but great all the same.

Black Dagger 23-01-2019 08:09 AM

I finished it the other day.

I would die for Aimee x

Shaun 24-01-2019 06:03 PM

Categorically the best Netflix comedy of all time.

I was going to say 'show' but Daredevil/Jessica Jones exist.

I finished episode 5. I adored the episode about abortion, the character Sarah was  wanted to hug her, and wanted the pro-life campaigners to come around to a new way of thinking but that would've been too idealised  LOVE Lily, Eric, the swing band teacher (forever Gerald from Peep Show), Ola, Otis' mum, the caravan park owner and ofc Maeve. Jackson (and his family) is great as well.

Shaun 26-01-2019 07:03 AM

Finished it

Spoiler:

A few clumsy endings that made me worry they didn't think they'd get a second season and tried to wrap everything up. My heart aches for Maeve but it swells for Aimee

But Eric/Adam just made no sense really and I'm not sure I appreciate the idea that victims of gay bullying would or should just be so easily wooed by said bully's sudden coming out. I know bullies~have~hidden~depths~ but I do think it's a bit of a cliche, this idea of "he's picking on you because he likes you ;)" and just...idk it doesn't sit with me.

Also... military schools without the teen's consent (he's 17, not underage)... not still a thing, are they? :suspect:

Lily continued to be brilliant.

Also... is it just me or does the main character remind us of our Jay.

Spoilers Ahead

I finished this last night and ended up LOVING it. I was confused at the beginning because I had no idea what decade it was set in, and it felt like an unrealistic Americanised version of a British high school. The pessimist in me eye-rolled at the silliness earlier in the season, but that's mostly down to me being a bit of a snob and not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did.

The abortion episode was the turning point from liking the series to loving it. I thought it was really powerful and well done, and also executed a nice development regarding Maeve and Otis' relationship. Also, really ended up adoring (and binging...which is something I actually rarely do) the second half of the season. The Jackson-Maeve-Otis-Ola love square was well constructed and interesting. Glad they introduced Ola, so Otis didn't have his tongue wagging at Maeve all the time. idk whether the show intends for the viewer to want Maeve and Otis together, but I actually ended up liking Maeve and Jackson's (the Billy Ocean rendition was TOO cute) and Otis and Ola's relationships more. Especially after Otis done fucked up with Eric in episode 5 because of his infatuation with Maeve.

The show did a good job handling teenage issues, especially regarding sex, which a lot of shows are afraid to delve into as much as this one did (perfect as Netflix show, too, since they do diversity so well). Made me feel really nostalgic and brought me back to how I felt about being gay at school, taboos in terms of sexual activities, and being around friends who are sexually active and feeling "behind" as it was put in the final episode. Also, really ended up liking the visuals in terms of the cinematography, costumes and title shots at the beginning of every episode, though. ALSO, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH :flutter: The dance to The Origin of Love at the dance was great. Was refreshing to watch a coming of age show where the producers got the taste and nuances of character so accurate.

In terms of the other characters, I honestly found Eric annoying at first but grew to love him. Adam was interesting, but I don't really like where they took his character with Eric. It felt too cliché, although it was nice to see a softer side to Adam at the very end. The actor playing Adam was also really good. The mean group were awful, but they were intended to be so they served a purpose. Eric punching the other gay guy was a highlight. Maeve's brother was hot af but such an arsehole. Loved exploring Jackson's family dynamic. Otis' mum was so gloriously annoying and liked her relationship with Jakub. Nobody beats these two icons, though:

I know... I binge watched her all this week lol. Already ready for more

Denver 01-02-2019 03:47 PM

Season 2 is officially confirmed with most of the cast returning

TomC 06-02-2019 01:33 PM

This was such a delight <3 The characters were just incredible.

I do think the final episode left the series a bit too unfinished though, even if there is another season planned.

Jessica. 06-02-2019 02:40 PM

I've watched a few episodes, it is an absolute scream. I loved when Eric turned around and Lilly was just standing there with her top off. :joker:
