I use Plex but it's not like a Kodi box / stick, you don't really use it to stream from external sites, it's for watching stuff on your own media server. I basically have a "server" (an old laptop) that's on 24/7 and I download to that and the files automatically get added to the PLEX media library, and then plex on the TV just works similarly to something like a "personal Netflix".

If you want Kodi-style streaming from "unofficial channels" you pretty much need Kodi, which I don't think HAS a SMARTTV app, so you would need a kodi stick or box. I think possibly you can also run Android-based Kodi on a phone or tablet or whatever and then cast to a smartTV... I'm not sure, I haven't used Kodi for ages, since before I got a smartTV. Before that I had an oldschool LCD non-smart TV and a home made RasberryPi3 Kodi box... But I find torrent+PLEX far more reliable than dodgy Kodi streams.

All of this is so confusingggggg but thank you. I literally have no media downloaded so I don’t think Plex will work well for me

You'll need to get a Kodi stick / box anyway then :(. Though they tend to be pretty cheap and you can get them pre set-up from your local "dodgy kodi box guy" (they will usually be spamming them all over Facebook selling page :joker: ).

Or if the TV has Chromecast you could just run kodi on your phone and mirror it to the TV but tbh it's not the best option because it'll drain your phone battery and obviously cut off if the phone does.

I rooted my plasma box to a indigo wireframe so I can get the excellent US app Mofo so i can stream Drag race, American Twinkle and Zoey 101 on the Blu Ray/ But you need to hook the USB2 via a Verizon homehub and then beam it into the zag box via the smart remote. It takes about 50 minutes. Let me know how you get on

if you put an Amazon stick in your tv you can then put Kodi on that as an app as the amazon stick is Android. I gave up on kodi as i found it next to useless. I just pay the relevant subscriptions these days as they work flawlessly

I have real, paid for Netflix and Amazon Prime subscriptions too because I agree they are much less hassle, but there are a lot of things that you can't get on them so I need Plex to fill that gap.

I have sky as well but I'm not going to watch something like The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones on Sky Atlantic, having to fast forward through ads like some sort of peasant.

I use Kodi sometimes and a TV app that you pay for aswell but you get all the channels and Video on Demand, it's €16 a month or something. Kodi is grand for Tv box sets but you have to keep the version up to date or you won't get links. I rarely use it much since I got that TV app though

Just get a USB stick and put stuff on it to plug into the TV and use until you figure out something better at least

I think she wants to stream video rather than a solution for playing downloaded stuff.

To be honest though, "unofficial" streams are sort of a dying breed with the sites constantly being shut down and blocked by ISP's these days. Only ways to go are subscription streaming (Netflix et al) and VPN + torrenting. For copyright free material of course. :hee:.
