Prisoners to get keys to their rooms, and guards to knock before going in..

Inmates have been given the keys to their own cells at HMP Berwyn in Wrexham
Guards must knock first and inmates come and go from their cells as they please
Prison blocks are now called ‘communities’ and the prisoners even get laptops
The £250million prison has even renamed cells as 'rooms' and prisoners as 'men'
Erm, does this not kind of negate the 'punishment' side of prisons?!

Its really sounding like the better choice, for many many people. I swear if I was homeless, I would just commit endless crimes to get sent somewhere like this rather than sleeping on the streets hungry. Hell, these prisoners probably have a better life than a lot of workers today..

GoldHeart 29-03-2019 12:24 PM

So now that's a bed to sleep on , tv , internet , being fed , visitors , education, and now the keys to their own rooms how sweet like it's an apartment complex with guards walking by :bored:. You wouldn't think they were locked up for crimes you'd think it was a summer camp.

I'm sure there was even talk of prisoners being allowed to vote , but don't think that was granted .

What the **** is going on in this world?

Tom4784 29-03-2019 12:35 PM

Seems like an article aimed at riling people with justice hardons tbh.

There's too many purposely unanswered questions in the article which is telling that the story is less sensational than it sees.

It's a low risk prison, likely for people who are either vulnerable or are guilty of non-violent crimes who can be rehabilitated. I don't really have a problem with it as I do agree with the Scandinavian philosophy presented in the article, it doesn't matter if you have a laptop in your room or if people knock. You've still ****ed your life up, you're still a prisoner and you've still got to rebuild afterwards.

My justice hardon is alive and kicking of course!

Basically, if this is being done those in that prison should just be released, and on probation or something, seems utterly pointless.

Yes if they are that low risk, they could be doing community service wearing a tag rather than costing the country to keep them?

Indeed.

Yes that's why.

AnnieK 29-03-2019 01:31 PM

Open prisons have been similar to this for years, inmates don't get "locked down" as such and have weekend home visits to adjust to being back into regular society.

Considering they are imprisoned? Probably not.

Oliver_W 29-03-2019 03:09 PM

Maybe for non-violent non-sexual "white collar" crimes this sort of thing is okay, and like Dezzy said a spell in prison will be a stain on their CV forever and they'll still need to rebuild their lives. Also, having slightly nicer cells won't make the prison gang culture and whatnot evaporate

Crimson Dynamo 29-03-2019 04:57 PM

they should be out in work gangs cleaning up rivers, lades and ponds. there is no excuse for these lazy swines not to be worked 12 hours a day 7 days a week to help the community

Twosugars 29-03-2019 05:14 PM

The same conditions to be demanded in the tibb jail?

there is a slight issue with the actions of the judiciary to sort out first

its more pressing, shall we say?

It will probably be the paedophiles and rapists.

LaLaLand 29-03-2019 07:12 PM

This is my town's prison, and it's ****ing ridiculous.

No end of people who I know got jobs there as staff/guards and most if not all have quit because they're restricted in everything they do, even when it comes to something like restraining violent inmates. They all went on strike and eventually left because it's so daft and the prisoners were running riot and abusing these "rules".

That would take paid work away from non-criminals though.

Withano 29-03-2019 07:50 PM

I live relatively close too and was going to post the same.

The prison is now essentially run like a hotel and the guards are the staff.

They're treated better than our own elderly in care. And the lucky of us will be elderly one day. Prisoners should be working for the good of society.

Surely the smart answer to that is to look into improving the quality of care and options for older people rather than seeking to lower the quality of life for prisoners for no other reason than a self righteous sense of satisfaction.

Making life worse for prisoners does nothing for the situation of elderly people.

armand.kay 30-03-2019 02:12 PM

Why are people so desperate for prisoners to be treated like cattle?
