NL: Push for May 4th Remembrance Day to be more international

Young people in the Netherlands support the commemoration of the war dead on May 4, but want to see more recognition for the victims of wars in other countries, the latest annual survey of national attitudes has found.

The National 4 and 5 May Committee, which supervises the events to mark the national day of remembrance and Liberation Day, said Dutch people valued the low-key tone of the commemorations and did not want to make them more ceremonial.

Overall 94% of people appreciated the two minutes’ silence on May 4, while 88% backed hanging the national flag at half mast and 86% approved of playing the national anthem.

A growing number said the commemorations should be extended to cover the war dead of all nationalities, a suggestion that has caused controversy in previous years.

The proportion rose to 21% from 16% last year, while the number who believe only Dutch victims should be recognised has fallen from 18% to 12%. Overall 29% believe the event should mark fallen soldiers in all conflicts, not just the Second World War.

‘Our research shows that the current solemn form of remembrance and celebration and the rituals that go with it are greatly valued by young and old people alike,’ said committee chair Gerdi Verbeet. What we also see is that the view of war and the commemoration of its victims is becoming increasingly international.’

[Despite being neutral, the Netherlands
in World War II was invaded by
Nazi Germany on 10 May 1940,
under orders of Adolf Hitler.

On 15 May 1940, one day after
the bombing of Rotterdam,
the Dutch forces surrendered.
The Dutch government and
the royal family saved themselves
by going to London. Princess Juliana
and her children moved on to Canada
for additional safety. ]

That Failed

I think it's fair to say that, yes, Holland was occupied but their resistance fighters were heroes... and the Dutch people, despite having been under Nazi rule and half of them starving, they aided the allied troops wherever they could. Holland is next door to Germany, we have a sea dividing us from them. I'm very proud of what this country did in the war, but it's also worth remembering what people who were virtually powerless, risked to shelter allied troops and to fight the Nazis.

so basically ur pointing out us dutch are a bunch of cowards :idc:

of course we are grateful for the allied troops liberating us, and that is what we celebrate on May 5th, liberation day

but first we remember the dead on May 4th

The Dutch people were very brave... I can't imagine what it must be like living under Nazi rule. The allies would have had a much harder time if they hadn't been helped by the Dutch people. And I've been to the cemetery in Arnhem, it's kept so beautifully by the Dutch. I think there is great respect on both sides.

yes

and also some people visit the former concentration camps, also to hold a remembrance ceremony there, for all who had died there in the gas chambers or from starvation or a illness

Otto Frank, father of Anne Frank (from the Anne Frank Diary) had survived 4 of these concentration camps, and had seen rest of his family die there in each one of them

he survived the war himself and died of old age many many years later

Holland lost around 75% of their Jewish community, most of whom had lived in Holland for centuries. The fact is that Holland didn't just hand over Jews like France did. In fact, most of the anti-Jewish laws passed after 1940 in France were issues by the French, not the Germans.

Holland has good reason to stand proud.
