Was the implication that they died going up the mountain?

Don't think so.

I think it was just showing them all fading away into dust, to be forgotten about, like what will happen to most of us.

I thought it was quite a Blackadder esque ending

Series 3,4 and 5 are up there with the great sitcoms, certainly as good as anything in modern times.
