Melania Trump's quiet act of rebellion as she picks dress from pro-abortion label

Melania Trump's state visit wardrobe is causing a stir - and husband Donald Trump is totally oblivious to the subtle message she's putting out

Melania Trump is often the subject of brutal criticism for her perceived tolerance of husband Donald Trump's many troubling antics - but has she secretly been trying to counter his ways?

That's the question being asked after her wardrobe choices on day one of her and Trump's state visit to the UK, where they've been welcomed by the Queen and the royal family to British soil.

As a woman who doesn't get much chance to speak in public, it's hard to know what Melania thinks. Did she realise what she was doing when she wore that Zara jacket amid the detained child migrant crisis? Or, as her stylist Hervé Pierre once said, are her sartorial choices "not that complicated"?

Either way, eagle-eyed Trump watchers noticed something different about Melania's outfit yesterday as she and the president left the White House and made their way to Air Force One for their flight to the UK.

The 49-year-old mum of one opted for a white $4,400 (£3,475) Gucci midi-dress with a London-inspired print - and while she got the nod from fashionistas for the tribute to the capital, it was more interesting that she'd chosen a piece from Gucci.

Just days earlier, the Italian fashion house staged its 2020 cruise collection show in Rome where a strong political message of pro-choice rights was prevalent throughout.

Models stormed down the runway with Gucci-printed gags wrapped around their mouths, while one wore a blazer with the 70s feminist slogan My Body My Choice embroidered across the back.

Other pieces from the collection featured a sparkly uterus motif and there were nods to the gender equality movement Chime For Change's logo.

One jumper featured the numbers 22.051978 - a tribute to the date in which abortion in Italy became legal.

It comes after Trump made his feelings on pro-choice rights very clear - amid several US states passing legislation that severely restricts a woman's right to get an abortion.

The president posted a series of tweets last month stating he is "very strongly pro-life" with the exception of rape, incest and protecting the life of the mother - "the same position taken by Ronald Reagan", Trump wrote.

"We have come very far in the last two years with 105 wonderful new federal judges (many more to come), two great new supreme court justices … and a whole new and positive attitude about the right to life," he added.

His right-wing vice-president Mike Pence recently repeated Trump's comments that pro-choice activists support "infanticide" - the killing of newborn babies.

Or maybe, just maybe she liked the dress ?

If her method of "countering his ways" is just to buy a dress, what good is she?

Can't really have it both ways though. When she wore the coat previously, it was said she didn't think about the message on it .... now we are saying she wore a london focused dress because it was appropriate

Her husband is Scottish and they are in the UK

There's a difference between a coat bearing a possible political message and her choosing a dress because "We're going to London and this has London images on it".

I'm not gonna lie, I do love Melania Trump. She is goals, she's rinsing a fool for a lifestyle beyond her wildest dreams and she hates him just like the rest of us. It wouldn't surprise me if this was completely intentional, she can barely stand to be next to him in public so quiet displays of rebellion like this wouldn't be unrealistic.

what a sad way to spend your life if this is true, imagine living with someone you hate...just think about it, no lifestyle in the world would make me do that

Cherie 05-06-2019 11:50 AM

The dress is Gucci, if it was from some unknown designer I would think maybe, the label is what she was going for here

armand.kay 05-06-2019 11:52 AM

I thought from the title it was gonna be some lowkey fashion house ran by some hardcore pro-abortion feminist but it's literally Gucci flrhgifwfpfihf

In fairness they lived apart for quite a while, I don't think she joined him in the White House for months because she stayed in New York with her son. Even in the White House, she doesn't have to spend time with him. I reckon she's happy enough to focus on her son and the lifestyle, I reckon that if it wasn't for the white house, they'd lead separate lives.

If she is happy and her son is happy, that's all that matters, really.

My reaction too.

First Lady and world's most famous trophy wife wears Gucci dress. That's the headline.

I think people have read too much into it, shes opted for the label rather than putting any more thought into it than that imo
