This fact was actually revealed last year in a video by Modern Wisdom, featuring S1 islander Chris Williamson, where he talks about a lot of behind the scenes factoids. Here's the Vid:

Considering that there's been two suicides associated with this show, I don't think it's a bad thing that the contestants get a day off from the cameras. Work is still work, even in a nice location.

Yeah reality TV production can be an absolute draining nightmare from the sounds of it, being sequestered and forced into silence and not being allowed to interact unless given prompts or being recorded, so I think it's pretty fair.

There must be something quite suffocating about having to constantly act like you're romantically involved with people you feel nothing for, and I know these people subject themselves to that, but I agree with Dezzy's point in lieu of the two suicides that stepping back and allowing the contestants more freedom is essential to their mental health.

Kem was S3 though, and both suicides took place after S3, so the day off still isn’t really ‘enough’.

It’s important that it happens but much more needs to be done to help the islanders through any mental health issues they have.
