Arista :fist:

A loud bang heard across Essex was a sonic boom caused by military aircraft, police have said.

Residents reported feeling their houses "shaking" after a "loud explosion" that was heard in Harlow, Epping, Chelmsford and Stansted at about 18:40 BST.

The sound sparked a large number of 999 calls, according to police.

Stansted Airport said two RAF Typhoon jets had escorted a Jet2 flight in to land because of a disruptive passenger on board.

A 25-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of assault and endangering an aircraft.

The plane was en route to Dalaman in Turkey when it was redirected back to Stansted, an airline spokeswoman said.

Interesting sciencey stuff:

A sonic boom isn't one "boom" that everyone hears at once, it is a continuous effect that follows the plane at all times while it's moving faster than Mach 1 (the speed of sound). You hear the "boom" as it passes you. Someone 10 miles down the road will hear it as it passes them. And so on. You'll hear it again if the plane turns around and comes back your way... it's not a "new boom", it's the same "sound" (actually the shockwave generated by the speed) :omgno:.

A large craft at anything like the speed of light hitting the atmosphere would vaporize instantly :omgno:. Might as well be hitting concrete. Sonic booms don't happen in space because they're actually a wave of air pressure... you can pretty much go as fast as you want in a vacuum without problems.
