Extinction Rebellion: London and around the UK Protests

[Extinction Rebellion have taken over the Strand, parking a huge blue boat outside the Royal Courts of Justice.
This is not just in London - one campaigner tells us “there’s going to be boats all over the country today.”]

Livia 15-07-2019 11:18 AM

How long would it take to drag them, and their silly boat, away?

Liam- 15-07-2019 11:24 AM

It might just be me being dense, but what’s the significance of the boat?

Livia 15-07-2019 11:39 AM

I imagine it appertains to the mess we've made of the oceans.

Edit: Or perhaps the rising sea level?

There was one of their little parades before a cosplay parade I was involved with on Saturday.

It felt nice that us weirdos dressed as superheroes and weebs weren't the most sad amd tragic that day <3

Which superhero did you go as?

We are almost at the point of no return when it comes to the state of our environment, I can't deride people for trying to make others take notice. Minor inconveniences mean little to your children's children who face an apocalyptic future.

Sure Dezzy
But Stopping Traffic
and far far worse stopping a Terminal Ill person
getting to their Essential Hospital Appointment
is criminal.

The only way to change anything is through
Parliament.

Hypotheticals doesn't make this protest any less valid.

Dragged by a giant 4x4 I would imagine.

Yes we've got that stupid pink boat in the middle of Bristol bridge. i suppose they'll be pissing n ****ting all over castle green park.

Tom4784 16-07-2019 01:52 PM

If Parliament doesn't listen, action must be taken. Protests must be held.

Anyone that has children should be concerned about what the future holds for them because it's getting to the point where we'll be beyond saving if we don't make serious changes soon.

Livia 16-07-2019 02:04 PM

We could go carbon neutral tomorrow and it wouldn't make a scrap of difference to global warming... yet most people are still very environmentally aware, I find. Most people are concerned about the plight of the planet and do all in their power to help make changes. Everyone is concerned... well, decent people are. Decent people recycling, saving water, using renewable energy and generally doing their bit... and going to work and paying tax... only to be stopped by a bunch of people NOT at work and imagining that their protest is informing the masses of something they don't know.

Great Points Livia

Meanwhile
China has the biggest Solar area in the world
But at the same time, China has restarted
the Dirty Coal Mines again

Tom4784 16-07-2019 02:12 PM

I think we've reached the point where little steps aren't going to work anymore. A lot of credited scientists have warned us all that we are at a tipping point and it would be arrogant to ignore it. Drastic action is needed, major changes need to happen.

Using China as an excuse for inaction does little to change the course we're on.

Yes... and if you mingle all that with their Human Rights abuses, they make Trump look like a moderate.

Again with the whataboutism.

'Trump's abuse of human rights is not as bad as China's so that makes his abuses perfectly fine!'

Maybe if just one more road is blocked by unemployed people, the government will push the Make Everything Better Button.

It would have to be a very magical button though, as it would need to not only affect the UK, but countries which are actually the biggest polluters.

Like Livia said, our going carbon neutral would do almost nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Though I'd take their protests more seriously if they actually came up with solutions, like pushing for greater use of nuclear energy.
