Home Office under fire over 'racist' knifefree chicken boxes

https://news.sky.com/story/home-offi...boxes-11785645

[The Home Office has been branded
"crude" and "offensive" over an
attempt to tackle knife crime with
the distribution of #knifefree boxes
to chicken shops.
More than 321,000 chicken boxes
featuring the Home Office campaign
have been sent to more than 210 outlets
in England and Wales.
The boxes, which will replace
standard packaging in chains
such as Morley's, Chicken Cottage
and Dixy Chicken, are printed with
real life stories of young people who
have chosen to no longer carry a knife.]

So people are soiling themselves because anti-knife messages are on fried chicken boxes? Sounds a bit racist, assuming that only certain people like fried chicken.

All kids like Fried Chicken
And Girls are Knifing in London , as well.

Alf 15-08-2019 03:22 PM

This isn't how to tackle knife crime.

A better way is for parents to make sure their children know right from wrong.

bots 15-08-2019 03:45 PM

it's the association common with fried chicken, and why target that on its own

smudgie 15-08-2019 04:40 PM

Perhaps if they had other fast food outlets doing the same then Lammy couldn’t jump on his soapbox so quick.

I think we all know the demographics overrepresented when it comes to knife crime in London is young black men. so we are to assume any campaign to tackle knife crime in London is specifically targeted to young black boys. so essentially printing "knives are bad" on fried chicken boxes is the only way they thought they could get through to these boys... and yeah, we know that everybody likes fried chicken but let's not act like white people haven't created a stereotype around black people and fried chicken and that stereotype is not why they thought this was a good idea. I really don't buy that anyone actually believes that they would ever do the same thing to tackle the white on white gang violence in this country. Like just imagine that scenario in your head.

armand.kay 15-08-2019 05:30 PM

like this is so obviously racist and silly that if it wasn't actually happening it would make for a hilarious satirical sketch... wth is going on?? ldreiovklnoib

Then let's just say black people commit the most knife crimes, and fried chicken is popular among black people ... then surely it's no different to advertising a Warhammer Club in a comics shop?

Sure they do, but targeted advertisements rely on general interests of whoever they're aimed at. Maybe music streaming sites have similar banners on their hiphop sections?

Anyway, this particular instance is clearly in response to the recent report that potential gang members are being groomed in such places. It's about trying to stem that, rather than the Home Office thinking "black people love chicken, put the ads in there!"

I'm confused how is this racist???? , if anything they're causing racism by stereotyping a certain group of people liking chicken :nono: .

Exactly,it's ridiculous ,its like some people have to find racism in everything,if it keeps on people will start resenting other people.

References to fried chicken have been commonly used as an insult though so they could have either targeted something more than just chicken or picked another avenue

I think it's a sign of things to come from this cabinet

It's less to do with stereotypes, and more to do with the recent inquiry which found gang members recruit young members in chicken shops ...

We’re talking about these messages that are being printed on chicken boxes in hopes that a certain demographic would take notice of it. Like Armand said, black people are over-represented when it comes to knife crime, so they’re only chance of decreasing it is by plastering a little message on chicken box? Not even a billboard or something where everyone can see it and it can be targeted at all audiences?

I never said this fried chicken racist stereotype was invented from scratch.
but there's a difference between actual offensive ads & this current ad which is just about tackling knife crime.

If I thought it was racist I'd say just like that ridiculous H& M ad with the black kid or Danny baker's tasteless joke about the royal baby .

Plus did you ever think it's more to do with chicken shops recruiting gangs as that was on the news . I think that's the only reason they're putting it on chicken boxes , thinking it's a bad idea or pointless is fine but you can't automatically call it racist just because you don't agree with it .
