Spider-Man out of the MCU after Disney and Sony fail to reach deal

Quote:

Sony Pictures and Walt Disney Studios have failed to come to terms over the future of Spider-Man movies, Deadline reports, leaving Marvel Studios and producer Kevin Feige out of Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man slate.

This means that we won’t be seeing any more Avengers or other Marvel Cinematic Universe characters in a Spider-Man movie — and that it’s likely Peter Parker won’t be seen in any future MCU installments for the foreseeable future.

The dispute came down to money, according to Deadline.

“Disney asked that future Spider-Man films be a 50/50 co-financing arrangement between the studios, and there were discussions that this might extend to other films in the Spider-Man universe. Sony turned that offer down flat [...] Sony proposed keeping the arrangement going under the current terms where Marvel receives in the range of 5% of first dollar gross, sources said. Disney refused.”

Asked for comment, a Sony representative declined to confirm Deadline’s report to Polygon.

What a ****ing joke!

Twitter/YouTube/social-media has exploded in nerd-rage over this news.

For me the Marvel Disney films have started to get a bit convoluted with Endgame and Far From Home, and all the time-travel, multiple realities and shape-shifting aliens that could be anyone.

Apparently negotiations actually arent over yet and there's still a chance for it to be saved

Mitchell 20-08-2019 11:31 PM

I do wonder if the outrage will help negotiations

Barry. 20-08-2019 11:47 PM

I am so angry with that.

Sony to slash the budget for the third film, Spider-Man: Stuck at Home?

Marsh. 21-08-2019 12:13 AM

Good.

Tired of these interlinked movies. Enough!

To take this seriously (idk if it is anyway oops) I honestly found the vast amount of films in the MCU to be... daunting, but it truly does have a big pay-off

it's really special to me, but Spiderman is just a thread in the web (:hehe:)

Ant. 21-08-2019 12:25 AM

Far From Home spoilers:

Spoiler:

it honestly feels like the next Spiderman film along would've had to bring in some MCU characters imo... like Nick Fury pretty much begging for Spiderman... what's happening to that

user104658 21-08-2019 07:48 AM

It would do damage to both franchises in the hundreds-of-millions. They'll figure it out.

Oliver_W 21-08-2019 08:19 AM

This means that we won’t be seeing any more Avengers or other Marvel Cinematic Universe characters in a Spider-Man movie

That wouldn't be terrible tbh

I think they could have dialled down the Iron Man stuff in both movies but I think the links being there help the overall property. All the movies basically function as ads for each other... Their box office will drop a bit if they're out of the MCU.

Likewise having Spider-man available for future Avengers movies is practically essential . His absence would have a significant impact on the "team up" MCU

To be fair, Spidey is definetly the best remaining solo hero, and he should be the one the MCU is making the "face of the franchise", even if he isn't the in-story leader.

Ant. 21-08-2019 09:23 AM

Endgame spoilers below

Spoiler:

Remember how they tried to make Spiderman the new 'face' of Marvel from Phase 4 onwards effectively replacing Iron Man?

Whose gonna be the new face? Thor and the GotG? I... Wouldn't be opposed to that lmao

LukeB 21-08-2019 09:33 AM

I hope Tom Holland will still be spider-man

I enjoy Avengers. By all means have the big team up movies but keep the individual stories individual!! :fist:

Calderyon 21-08-2019 10:06 AM

Not watched them, so cannot care yet.

Yes Disney/21st Century Fox Films
may want Sony to pay more.

I suppose it's different tastes, because to me that's when Marvel is at it's best is when it delves into it's true nature rather than watering themselves down like some of their earlier Movies.

But yeah it's getting silly with Spider-Man at this point, I've yet to watch Far From Home or The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but both series are basically gonna be incomplete just because Disney and Sony can't sort their **** out it's ridiculous.

For me personally I won't watch a future Spider-Man Film series until it's actually complete because it's a joke to invest into something that won't conclude itself.

There's no reason that Sony can't make a 3rd Spider-man movie with Holland and Co either way... They just can't reference Tony Stark any more or other Disney owned Marvel characters. Sony has the rights to use Spider-man, MJ, etc. and (it seems from last year's PS4 game) pretty much every major Spider-man villain.
