Is this a workhouse?....

'Plans for a new purpose-built, 292-room hostel for homeless families in Haggerston have been given the go-ahead.

Blue Chip Trading Ltd and property developer Hezi Zakai will now get to work on building the hostel, which will be managed by the council and hold over 600 people once it is finished.

It will be fitted with workstations, a launderette, 24-hour security and free wi-fi.

Councillors and residents have spoken out against what the scheme represents, warning that while the building is classed as temporary accommodation, families' stays in the 20-square-metre units are likely to be anything but temporary.'

no

Marsh. 13-10-2019 05:08 PM

What is meant by "workstations"?

smudgie 13-10-2019 05:10 PM

I would think a workstation means the same as it does in houses.
A table/desk and a chair to sit on.

Kizzy 13-10-2019 05:16 PM

A table and a chair is not a workstation.. in a 20 metre room it would be a dining area surely?

Marsh. 13-10-2019 05:17 PM

There's no suggestion that they are working there though?

It's sheltered accommodation?

It stated workstation.
If it double up as a dining table that’s even better. Enough room for one, two at a push.
Win win.

I would imagine the workstations are for kids to do their homework etc

Not trusting those in power is one thing ... but unless she's been drinking lighter fluid, she doesn't actually think this is a workhouse :joker:

Looking at the artists impression the building is covered with windows, obviously if the room doesn’t have a window thats not good, but with my limited knowledge it doesn’t look like it’s the case?

Of course the buidling has windows cherie... on the outside but will 292 rooms each have a window was my point. Obviously it's not going to be a solid concrete block like an NCP car park is it? :/

I do fear we will end up sliding back to those days at the rate we're going but I wouldn't say this is a workhouse unless they are given labour to 'earn' their keep.

For argument sake, I don't think that'd be awful if the place wasn't funded by the government and completely unattached to the welfare system.

So you wouldn't mind if it was a workhouse then?

It's something that could work on paper but not in practice. There would always be abuse, especially if it was privately owned.

We only have to look how cruelly we treat people on benefits to see that a workhouse would go the same way as they did back then.
