Birmingham: police called to reports of people with machetes at cinema...

A number of police officers have been assaulted after a brawl at a Birmingham cinema.

Officers were called to Star City, an entertainment complex in the Nechells area, just after 5.30pm on Saturday following reports that a group of people with machetes had arrived at the cinema.

More than 100 people were at the cinema and "pockets of fighting" broke out as officers tried to clear the area, West Midlands Police said in a statement.

A number of officers were injured and several arrests were made.

Witness Rachael Allison said: "The police told everyone to leave the cinema as they held Taser guns in their hands and started to bring in guard dogs.

"I spoke to a policeman who told me it is unclear whether the kids had weapons and also stated when kids fight they bring their group of friends."

Another witness Choleigh McGuire said: "Armed police come, Tasers come, all of the people that were fighting ran off into the cinema, hiding. I am shaking."

Police said a dispersal order is in place, meaning officers can arrest anyone who refuses to leave when asked.

How awful.

Star City is normally such a fun place to go to, and hopefully the people that were there are all feeling okay.

A second cinema chain has pulled gang-themed film Blue Story after a reported brawl at a screening in Birmingham.
Seven police officers were injured following reports of youths with machetes at Star City on Saturday evening.
Five teenagers were arrested, including a 13-year-old girl. As a result of the violence, Vue cinemas said Blue Story would no longer be showing at any of its 91 outlets in the UK and Ireland.
A second cinema chain, Showcase, has also pulled the film from its screens.

Such a shame, from what I can gather the film does not glorify gangs but shows the grim side of dying on the street on your own and your postcode that you are fighting for will let you.

I hope they can reverse this decision

Not far from me, always loved it as a kid but it’s been rough since. I read somewhere the Gangs have a ‘no whites after 8pm’ sign up all over the place, not sure the truth in it but shocking if true :omgno:

They need to Bulda bridge with each other, rather than telling people you don't agree with to Kristoff.

Blue Story: Vue defends dropping gang film after '25 significant incidents in 24 hours'

Vue has defended its decision to pull gangland film Blue Story, saying there were 25 "significant incidents" in the 24 hours after the film was released in its cinemas.

The chain said that it was not a decision it took lightly or without consideration, adding that 16 of its cinemas had faced problems linked to the film.

"This is the biggest number we have ever seen for any film in a such a short time frame," the chain said.

The company added: "Despite a range of precautionary measures in place, including increased security, removal of late-night showings and reduced screenings of the film, the decision to withdraw Blue Story in its entirety was made on Saturday evening on grounds of safety alone.

"While we are disappointed that these are the actions we have had to take, we hope it is understandable that we cannot, and will not, take any risks with regard to the welfare and safety of our staff and our customers.

"Unfortunately, the actions of a significant few have spoiled the opportunity for others, but we stand by our decision to withdraw the film from our schedule indefinitely."

The decision came after police were called to an entertainment complex in Birmingham on Saturday night after reports of young people with machetes.
