Spanish TV reporter ‘quits job live in air’ after lottery win...
 

A Spanish television reporter has been left red faced after wildly celebrating a lottery win live on air that later turned out to be a fraction of the jackpot.

Natalia Escudero, who works for public broadcaster RTVE, began screaming on camera when the result was announced.

She said she was "not coming to work tomorrow", suggesting she believed she had scooped a big prize.

But it later turned out she had won the relatively small sum of €5,000 (around £4,300).

Ms Escudero later apologised for her reaction on Twitter, saying she had recently been having a "difficult" time for "personal reasons".

Spain's Christmas lottery is an annual tradition, with families, friends and colleagues often clubbing together to buy tickets in the hope of a jackpot.

It dished out a total of €2.24bn (£1.9bn) in prizes this year.

Other lotteries around the world have bigger individual top prizes, but Spain's is ranked as one of the richest in terms of total prize money involved.

The top-prize winning number - known as El Gordo (The Fat One) - was worth €400,000 (£335,000).

The winners won €20,000 (£17,000) for each euro spent on a €20 ticket.

In my experience, £5k will evaporate before your eyes. It's scary.

My daughter’s brother in law had been playing poker games on his phone for a while then played in an online poker competition one evening a few years ago ... he won £13,000 and quit his job for 12 months !!

Works for BT and they said he could go back anytime ..

Quitting seems a bit extreme, most large companies allow a "career break" of 6 - 12 months that guarantees a job will be still available at the end.

Obviously small businesses can't offer that as they probably have a small staff and need to fill the role...

Well he had 12 months off work ( in his 20’s ) ... pretty nice I’d say ..

He’s married with a sprog now so he timed it just right really :)

It would last one single person in their 20's quite easily to be fair, I lived (and not uncomfortably) on roughly £800 a month at Uni (age 20-24) which works out at just under £10k a year. £300/month rent and bills in a shared house and £500 spending.

It would be very hard to live on for an actual adult of course, and impossible with any dependants in the mix.

Full time not these days, minimum wage (35 hours) is roughly £15.5k/year. Still well below the real living wage though, which is around £17k full time.
