I know lots of black kids whose parents are proper cockney, but the kids themselves talk like they're from the outskirts of Kingston, Jamaica. It sounds stupid. It sounds even more stupid when white kids do it. The parents are all "apples and pears guvnor" and their children, born and raised here are like "Wagwan?" "Nagwan…"

Talking with an accent as a kid/teen to make you sound 'ard and 'gangsta' is quite common, most grow out of it. It's stupid, but harmless.

I agree. There's nothing cultural in speaking with an accent that isn't your own.

Kids get their accent and vocabulary from peers, not parents :shrug:... And colloquialisms and slang come from all sorts of sources. It doesn't really matter what their parents sound like.

My kids don't sound half-English because their mum has an English accent... They sound like their friends.

I don’t think that’s fair, though. You don’t necessarily pick up the way you speak from your parents, especially as you mature.
