2020 Oscar Nominations Predictions

It's now 2 days before they're announced. Who wants to guess who and what'll get nominated for cinematography, the acting categories, the screenplay categories, Best Director, and Best Picture?

MB. 13-01-2020 12:36 AM

Last minute predictions for the main categories (assuming they do get nominated, blue is who I'm hoping will win, red is who I think will):

Best Picture
1917
Jojo Rabbit
Joker
Little Women
Marriage Story
The Irishman
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Parasite

I wouldn't rule out 1917 or The Irishman (if the Academy can get over its hatred of Netflix, that is) winning, though. I can't believe that I'm the least confident about Little Women getting nominated, when it's one of the most deserving potential nominees :worry:

Best Director
Bong Joon-ho (Parasite)
Martin Scorsese (The Irishman)
Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood)
Sam Mendes (1917)
Todd Phillips (Joker)

Todd Phillips getting nominated over Greta Gerwig would suck, especially when he'd be nominated in the same category as a director he flagrantly ripped off, but I can easily see it happening

Best Actor
Adam Driver (Marriage Story)
Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood)
Joaquin Phoenix (Joker)
Robert De Niro (The Irishman)
Taron Egerton (Rocketman)

Best Actress
Awkwafina (The Farewell)
Charlize Theron (Bombshell)
Renée Zellweger (Judy)
Saoirse Ronan (Little Women)
Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story)

I could see Cynthia Erivo taking Awkwafina's token POC slot here though

Best Supporting Actor
Al Pacino (The Irishman)
Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood)
Jamie Foxx (Just Mercy)
Joe Pesci (The Irishman)
Song Kang-ho (Parasite)

Best Supporting Actress
Florence Pugh (Little Women)
Laura Dern (Marriage Story)
Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers)
Margot Robbie (Bombshell)
Scarlett Johansson (Jojo Rabbit)

yes I'm declaring that I want a tie, what of it (although in reality Florence could easily be replaced in this category by Nicole Kidman for Bombshell, so I'm not holding my breath)

Best Original Screenplay
1917
Knives Out
Marriage Story
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Parasite

Best Adapted Screenplay
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit
Joker
Little Women

Best International Film
Atlantics
Honeyland
Les Misérables
Pain and Glory
Parasite

Best Animated Feature
Frozen II
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
I Lost My Body
Missing Link
Toy Story 4

Nick. 13-01-2020 01:05 AM

Last minutes predictions as well, I cba to do them all so I'll do the main six

Best Picture
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
Parasite
The Irishman
Marriage Story
Jojo Rabbit
Joker
Little Women
Ford V Ferrari/Le Mans 66

(Hoping Knives Out makes the cut, the less said about Joker the better)

Best Director
Bong Joon Ho
Greta Gerwig
Martin Scorsese
Sam Mendes
Quentin Taratino

(Olivia Wilde deserves better)

Best Actress
Scarlett Johanson - Marriage Story
Renee Zellweger - Judy
Saoirse Ronan - Little Women
Cynthia Erivo - Harriet
Charlize Theron - Bombshell

(Ronan might just be wishful thinking, could easily replace with Awkwafina)

Best Actor
Adam Driver - Marriage Story
Joaquin Phoenix - That ****ing clown movie
Leonardo Di Caprio - OUATIH
Taron Egerton - Rocketman
Antonio Banderas - Pain & Glory

(Could see Banderas being snubbed for Jonathan Pryce, wouldn't be surprised if George McKay ended up nominated based on the 1917 hype)

Best Supporting Actress
Laura Dern - Marriage Story
Margot Robbie - Bombshell
Scarlett Johansson - Jojo Rabbit
Florence Pugh - Little Women
Annette Benning - The Report

(Yes I want J-Lo nominated, but considering she's set to be the sole nom I doubt the film has the momentum)

Best Supporting Actor
Brad Pitt - OUATIH
Al Pacino - The Irishman
Joe Pesci - The Irishman
Tom Hanks - A Beautiful Day
Antony Hopkins - The Two Popes

(Kinda a weak category, could see the Parasite hype lead to Song Kang Ho be nominated depending on how much support there is for the Two Popes)

Expecting 1917/Joker (:yuk:) dominating the awards

LaLaLand 13-01-2020 01:06 AM

All I'm expecting is OUATIH to sweep the Oscars, because there's nothing that Hollywood and particularly The Oscars loves more than a film actually about the industry/"Hollywood" culture itself (i.e. like "La La Land" did).

I'm just really rooting for Phoenix to get Best Actor above all else though.

James 13-01-2020 04:36 AM

Best Picture
1917
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
The Irishman
Parasite
Marriage Story
Joker
Jojo Rabbit
Little Women
Ford v Ferrari (Le Mans '66) if nine nominees.
Winner Prediction: 1917

Best Director
Bong Joon Ho
Greta Gerwig
Martin Scorsese
Sam Mendes
Quentin Tarantino
Winner Prediction: Bong Joon Ho

Best Actor
Adam Driver
Joaquin Phoenix
Leonardo Di Caprio
Taron Egerton
Jonathan Pryce
Winner Prediction: Joaquin Phoenix to beat Adam Driver

Best Actress
Scarlett Johanson
Renee Zellweger
Saoirse Ronan
Awkwafina
Charlize Theron
Winner Prediction: Renee Zellweger

James 13-01-2020 04:55 AM

Best Original Score
Joker (Hildur Guonadottir)
1917 (Thomas Newman)
Marriage Story (Randy Newman)
Little Women (Alexandre Desplat)
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (John Williams)
Winner Prediction: Joker

Spider-Man: Far from Home will be overlooked for Original Score, in my opinion.

Best Visual Effects
The Lion King
The Irishman
1917
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Avengers: Endgame
Winner Prediction: The Lion King

Ad Astra should be nominated here though, but it didn't get enough attention.

Shaun 13-01-2020 05:00 AM

I don't know about full nominations predictions but I think the winners of the big 6 awards will be:

Picture - Marriage Story
Director - Sam Mendes
Actor - Joaquin Phoenix
Actress - Renee Zellweger
Supporting Actor - Brad Pitt
Supporting Actress - Florence Pugh

James 13-01-2020 12:05 PM

At 1:18 PM.

J-Lo not even being nominated for Best Supporting Actress is vile

Nick. 13-01-2020 12:45 PM

Taron Egerton/J-Lo/Ana De Armas/Olivia Wilde/Glasgow (No Place) all deserved better

Nick. 13-01-2020 12:46 PM

Joker for Directing and Screenplay is just embarrassing

MB. 13-01-2020 12:48 PM

And of course Todd Phillips got nominated over Greta

MB. 13-01-2020 12:49 PM

I got the Original Screenplay noms right at least

MB. 13-01-2020 12:50 PM

The all-white Supporting Actor category is a disaster as well

MB. 13-01-2020 12:56 PM

Klaus sneaking in a Best Animated Feature nom over Frozen

Shaun 13-01-2020 01:08 PM

I'm kinda ignorant of films until like a year after they come out, so I don't know of any candidates for supporting actor that'd be a change from #whiteblokes... usually there's a big hype about someone who's a POC but I haven't heard of any this year.

MB. 13-01-2020 01:08 PM

Enjoy the nominations I hope they make you happy. Dear lord, what a sad little life Joker. Ruined my night completely so you could have the nominations and I hope now you can spend them on lessons in grace and decorum. Because you have all the grace of a reversing dump truck without any tyres on.

Song Kang-ho for Parasite was considered a strong possibility, as was Jamie Foxx for Just Mercy

Shaun 13-01-2020 01:14 PM

Seems to just be a "try and get all the legends to attend" event this year. I'm a bit shocked Willem Defoe couldn't get a nomination... all clips I've seen of the Lighthouse look incredible. Like I'm sure Tom Hanks could've sat one season out.

Nick. 13-01-2020 01:16 PM

Also a shame that the only WOC of colour nominated for acting was playing a slave, Awkwafina and Lupita N'yongo were robbed

MB. 13-01-2020 01:17 PM

I'm not sure why I was expecting anything good considering Gr**n B**k won last year, tbf

Tom4784 13-01-2020 01:53 PM

I'm happy for Joker, it's one of those films I don't think I could watch again but it's an excellent and challenging film.

I haven't seen all the nominations yet though but from the bits I've seen, it seems a bit lopsided for the most part when it comes to other films, actors and directors getting snubbed.

Shaun 13-01-2020 01:56 PM

Just noticed Awkwafina and Taron Egerton don't have nominations either. Bizarre.

Why? It's well deserved.

Tony Montana 13-01-2020 02:04 PM

Glad Joker is leading the nominations. A masterpiece of a film. :clap1:
