Booking holidays from work?

Was in a well known supermarket earlier and the staff on the tills were talking about having booked their Christmas leave 2020 as soon as the leave year opened, and said others would be moaning that all the leave had been booked already but you had to get in fast

Where I work now we close for Christmas and Easter and there is no issue if everyone wants to be off at the same time, how about you?

I usually just phone up on the mornings I can't be arsed to get out of bed and have never been told no, yet.

I have to authorise holidays at work and it's a nightmare, especially considering the website we use to book holidays is woeful. It works on a team by team basis and no team is big enough to do it's job properly if more than two or three people are off for a week at a time so it's a balancing act of making sure you keep everyone happy while ensuring you've got enough people in for the shop to function. You get more days off the longer you've worked there and most people have been there for 10 years+ so almost everyone has a lot of holiday time to play with so it's just an endless nightmare to keep it all balanced.

Generally speaking, if you want Christmas off, the best chances of getting it at my work is to book it the Christmas before because it's pretty much the week that everyone tries to get off.

When I worked in a school, you got 5 long service days once you had completed 5 years, as soon as the leave year opened all the full time staff rushed to get Mondays and Fridays off, it caused a lot of tension

That's perfect, I would throw a sickie though rather than use my leave :omgno:

if you smoke 3 fags at work a day

you get an extra 16 days holiday a year

That's bad.

We have to book them 2 weeks before and wait for confirmation but I've never had an issue.

When I worked in asdas though it was 4 weeks and usually you had to chase it up. It was first come first serve and school holidays were SO bad, they used to refuse my holidays all the time unless I found cover too.

We arent allowed holidays in December due to it being the busiest time of year :/

AnnieK 17-01-2020 02:34 PM

We work holidays between us - the Directors know we won't leave the office short and will always ensure cover. School hols can be a pain as we all have youngish kids but we manage between us. Someone will usually cover and so there is never much tension over hols.

At my first job it was zero hours so they couldn’t reject my holidays really, I only stayed there about six months though.

My second one you accumulated so many hours for the year based on your contracted hours (I only worked weekends cos I was in college) and would usually ask a few weeks before and it would always be approved.

At Boots last year was the worst, only one person from pharmacy and one from retail was allowed off at a time so a lot of the weeks I wanted had gone. I did get my birthday week and a week for my summer holiday (the only week in summer available) but others I asked for got rejected.

God I only work at a pub and you’re looked at like a piece of **** for simply wanting a little holiday off. It’s turned into a massive drama and you’re guilt tripped the whole time into daring to have time off.

Good On You.

Crimson Dynamo 17-01-2020 04:28 PM

of course many people actually get 8 days off a month

Cal. 17-01-2020 04:29 PM

Ew I remember last year I used to only have 4 days off a month. So gross.

Cal. 17-01-2020 04:30 PM

I wouldn’t mind working more if it was for myself but working for somebody else is just mind numbing.

I wouldn’t say the work I and some other people do is. It’s just a means to an end. Not that I have it really really bad or anything. It’s just not enjoyable work and it’s long hours with no perks doing repetitive things for crap pay!
