Funnily enough I just started watching this and have finished series 1.

It’s funny because I like a lot of the characters in this show with only a few I don’t like but they all have quite a bit of depth to them.

Omar is cool. I do find him amusing in the sense that he’s like the taxman for drug dealers . He’s hardcore, fearless and he has a lot of morals and a code that he sticks by which I do think is a very good quality of his.

I actually quite like D’Angelo as well. I feel sorry for him because you can tell he doesn’t really agree with certain things that go on in “the game” and he’s been pretty much forced into that lifestyle. Many would probably just perceive him as a bit of a punk as well because he’s quite soft but he has a lot of heart and is surprisingly quite intellectual in other areas which is probably why he got along with Wallace so well. This is easily my favourite scene of his so far

Bird is probably one of the characters I disliked. He was a foul mouthed, crude and I found it oddly amusing when he was getting beat down in the interrogation room :hehe:

Wow I didn’t realise how much I rambled on there

I’ve really enjoyed Series 1 so I’ll continue watching. I’m surprised I haven’t watched it sooner tbh and it’s a shame the series themselves are very short but I’m looking forward to them nonetheless

Herc and Carver get going in the third season. I find their interactions in season one and two annoying to watch.

Bunk is consistently good thru all five series. Hard working veteran detective, always funny, always drinking.

Daniels - probably the only character who consistently does the right thing.

Freamon - The wise old analytical detective.

Characters who hardly get mentioned when it comes to faves are

Prop Joe - just brilliant in the later series,
Rawls - The biggest ball breaker in the show:laugh:

Keep going with it, its my fave show of all time. I watched it again about six months ago and got right back into it:joker:

After watching it all you'll probably come to the conclusion that the first season is one of the weaker seasons :joker: The third and fourth seasons are just incredible. Some of the best television I've ever watched. When I recently watched it, I thought it looked a bit dated in the early seasons but the quality of each seasons plot is as good a I've seen.

Thanks GiRTh  There’s just a lot of depth to this show so I can see why it is very popular and and easy to do rewatches. After everything that’s happened in the first season I can only imagine the second is just as good.

And all the place names they mention are real Baltimore streets. When they talk about North and Pulaski, Edmonton Gully and Pimlico Hill, those are real Baltimore places.

One of the many Wire drinking games is to take a sip whenever a street name is mentioned.

In the first season, take sip when ever D'angelo says 'Mos Def', when ever a character is getting drunk, whenever Prez gives us some exposition, whenever Bodie spits etc. :joker:

Sounds like a great game, will have to get me a crate of beers first . I’m glad I’m not the only one who picked up on D’Angelo saying ‘Mos Def’ and Bodie spitting all the time

second is one of my faves but its a different setting. Cant say any more or it'll spoil it.

I rank them 3,4,2,1,5

EDIT: It depends what mood I'm in as which order i put season 1 and 2. They're interchangeable but the rest are my order from best to worst

There are different drinking games for each season but its mainly about getting drunk, mentioning street names, McNulty saying 'What the ****** did I do', someone mentioning 'The game' etc. :joker:

Ah ok. Once I’ve finished series 2 I’ll post my thought here and when I finish the whole lot I’ll rank the series from best to worst.

Thats just my opinion. Watch all of them just to see how the characters pan out.

I forgot to mention Bubbles as a great character too. Brilliantly played by Andre Royo. Its a travesty that he was never even nominated for a major award. Probably the best performance ever of a drug addict.

Oh yes Bubbles I forgot about him. Honestly there is so much great acting in this show but Royo plays his role perfectly. Did this show get many awards when it first aired? I would’ve thought this series had quite a few major nominations for awards?

It largely went under the radar and received few awards. I agree its crazy how underappreciated it was when it was aired. It was largely word of mouth that got the Wire its reputation and when people heard about it they were comparing it to the multi award winning shows of the time like The West Wing and Sopranos

Seriously? That’s a shame considering it’s a HBO series as well I thought it would’ve got quite a lot of awards. It is a complex series but at the same time it is engaging and very well written. I only discovered it as it was in my YouTube recommended list.

It was a strange situation as so many people were saying The Wire was better than shows like Six Feet Under and Sex and the City; two shows that HBO plugged the hell out of. I dont understand why the HBO execs couldnt see how good the show was and then plugged it. It only became popular and got the attention it deserved when it became well know worldwide. The first two seasons of the Wire didnt get a rating on IMDB until the whole series finished. It was a greatly under appreciated show. I'm happy that I got into it back in 2003

Considering the shows popularity now I could imagine the HBO execs regretted ending this show so soon. Maybe the show being very raw or maybe the Emmys always going for safer options is why the show flew under the radar for so long? Like you say it’s very under appreciated I can’t believe it first aired in 2002 and it’s taken this long for me to discover it :skull:
