DragCon UK: an unmitigated disaster

DragCon UK has been described as a “disaster” and a “shambles” by fans after hundreds of ticket holders were left to queue outside for hours.

Some had paid a lot to travel to London with their young families and faced queues of up to four hours to get into the event, at which RuPaul and the entire cast of Drag Race UK were in attendance.

Those attending the event, which appears to have been oversold, have been posting on social media from the DragCon UK site at Olympia London.

Been queueing for 2 hours in the freezing cold with no explanation why it’s taking so long!” wrote one attendee. “Been excited about this event for months and people have travelled from across Europe to be here. Give us an apology and a #RuFund.”

“Standing out in the cold with hundreds of others. Not letting anyone in. Absolute shambles #dragcon,” tweeted another.

A third said: “Okay, @RuPaulsDragCon is a total shambles. We’ve been queueing for two hours, haven’t moved for one hour, no updates, no nothing! Cold, hungry, feet hurt, need the loo. And we paid a fortune for the tickets! #dragcon #dragconuk.”

Another simply wrote: “I can’t believe what a disaster dragcon is.”

One person at the event shared a video of the crowd chanting: “We want a refund.”

Another fan shared a clip of RuPaul dancing and quipped: "RuPaul knowing there’s nearly 3,000 people outside but he still got paid. #DragCon."

The official DragCon UK Twitter account responded with: “Hey kitty girls, we know that some of you unfortunately had to queue outside the convention center. We apologise for the wait as Health and Safety required us to slow the flow of people coming in.”

They oversold by 3,000 tickets and left thousands of people out in the cold, then sent Mayhem Miller out to apologise :skull:

...does this mean that all tickets will be honoured if fans are able to get there again..?....it’ll be very difficult for some to attend on a Sunday if they’re travelling a large distance and have to travel home for work etc...

On a somewhat related note, DragCon LA has been called off due to the coronavirus, making it the third RuPaul-affiliated thing to have been cancelled in the past week (after AJ & The Queen and Sherry Pie's career)
